New mobility station in Twedt: groundbreaking ceremony for SMILE24 project!
On June 13, 2025, a significant step towards better mobility in the region was taken in Twedt: Transport Minister Claus Ruhe Madsen, District Administrator Dr. Wolfgang Buschmann, Mayor Alexander Schmidt and NAH.SH authorized representative Petra Coordes symbolically broke ground for the new mobility station. This will not only offer barrier-free bus platforms, but will also include green weather shelters and a modern Bike+Ride facility that invites cyclists to transfer. The construction work is expected to be completed by the end of the year so that the station will be ready for full use in time.
The mobility station in Twedt is being built as part of the public transport model project SMILE24, which is supported with a total of 37 million euros in funding. Of this, 70 percent comes from federal funds and 30 percent from state funds, which brings the total cost of the station to around one million euros. The aim of this initiative is to significantly facilitate access to local public transport and to make bicycles more attractive as an environmentally friendly shuttle vehicle to bus transport.
Innovative mobility with SMILE24
SMILE24, launched on March 29, 2024, aims to be mobile around the clock, even without your own car. This project is being implemented on a large scale in the Schlei region and includes, among other things, the introduction of new express and tourist bus lines, as well as the NAH.SHUTTLE, which has around 200 trips per month in Twedt. In the future, the station will also function as a hub between buses and on-demand transport, making mobility even more flexible for citizens.
In addition, the Bike+Ride facility will be equipped with 24 covered bicycle parking spaces and a bicycle repair station. Digital displays will inform users about bus departure times, and a striking turquoise floor design will connect the different areas of the station. The traffic island on the B201 is intended to reduce the speed from 100 km/h to 70 km/h to ensure safe crossing of the road.
Sustainable mobility solutions
Mobility stations, also known as hubs or mobility points, have the aim of promoting the seamless connection of different means of transport. These stations are often located near train stations or public transport hubs and offer a variety of services, including car and bike sharing, electric vehicle charging infrastructure and lockers. The mobility station in Twedt will support this approach and, for example, also offer Park+Ride areas for cars, which are planned in the future.
When developing the mobility station, the needs of citizens are the focus. As part of SMILE24, not only are existing mobility offerings being improved, but new components are also being introduced to promote flexible and environmentally friendly transport. The evaluation of the offer will continue until the end of 2025 and is intended to ensure that the offers are always adapted to the needs of the users.
The new offers and the mobility station in Twedt not only represent an improvement in the infrastructure, but also a future-oriented mobility concept that takes both local and tourist needs into account.
