Daycare fee increase in Norderstedt: Parents outraged about plans!

In the city of Norderstedt, daycare fees are in jeopardy. On July 10, 2025, the Youth Welfare Committee met and discussed lively the possibility of increasing the fees for care. The administration's proposal proposes to increase the fees to the legal maximum of 5.80 euros per hour of care. Parents currently pay EUR 4.00 per hour of care. A huge leap that could pose major challenges for many families, reports NDR.

The planned increase could either take place directly from August 1, 2026 or come into force gradually until August 1, 2028. It would be a significant additional financial burden for many parents. According to estimates, they would have to budget between 40 and 80 euros more per month for looking after their children. And that's not all: the cost of meals should also double from the current 35 euros to either 70 euros or even 75 euros. It remains to be seen whether the children can still eat at the usual prices. This is based on information from NOA4 out.

Parents raise their voices

The news causes excitement and unrest in the city. Parents are less than enthusiastic about the possible increases and have already launched an online petition to protest against the adjustments. The SPD in particular, represented by parliamentary group leader Lasse Jürs, expresses sharp criticism of the plans and sees daycare provision as a fundamental right. The political resistance is noticeable. While the FDP is planning a motion to limit the increase to a moderate increase from 4 to 4.50 euros, the CDU has already recognized the need for discussion and would like to discuss the topic intensively.

An immediate increase would have dramatic effects: parents with a child aged three and over and 35 hours of care would have to expect an increase of 93.10 euros per month. Such sums put an enormous strain on the family budget, so many people get the impression that it is time to do something about the city.

Politics in motion

The decision to increase daycare fees will likely be postponed until after the summer break, with no final solution in sight. Many parents hope that political actors have a good hand and will meet the needs of families. After all, no one wants the already strained budgets in Norderstedt to be overwhelmed with further costs. The discussions are now open and the pressure on politicians is growing to find a fair solution.

It remains exciting – we will continue to monitor developments and report on them.
