What's going on in Bad Segeberg? We're working hard on the new production of the Karl May games here! The play “Halbblut” will have its premiere on June 27th and preparations are in full swing. Loud NDR Rehearsals have already been in full swing for more than three weeks, while the set construction impresses with a certain American southern flair. This setting includes, among other things, a white villa that is reminiscent of well-known works such as “Torches in the Storm” and “Gone with the Wind”.
The technical implementation brings with it some challenges: Set builder Erik Rüffler mentioned that the new train for the stage design arrived a week later than planned. In addition, the weather conditions and even a rope hanging in the way could not be ignored. However, the team is optimistic and continues to work on building the scenery between rehearsals. Some details such as the light blue paint of the new saloon still need to be completed, and rainwater also needs to be cleaned up.
A piece with tradition and your stars
The Karl May Games have established themselves as a family tradition since their first performance in Bad Segeberg in 1952. A total of 72 performances will take place until September 7th, which will be attended by numerous spectators in one of the largest open-air theaters in Europe. Alexander Klaws will be back on stage as Winnetou, while Bastian Semm will take on the role of Old Shatterhand. The cast is complemented by Sonja Kirchberger and Francis Fulton-Smith, who will be seen as gangster couple Charles and Donna Leveret.
The special thing about “Half-Blood” is the exciting plot in which Winnetou and Old Shatterhand search for the murderer Santer and experience mysterious adventures in Firwood Camp. Director Nicolas König is responsible for bringing the story to life. The challenges that lie ahead of the team cannot be underestimated; Nevertheless, the maintenance of the impressive stage design is estimated at around one million euros.
Cultural highlights and special measures
The season start of the Karl May Games this year is scheduled for June 28th. Mayor Toni Köppen welcomed the ensemble in the Bad Segeberg town hall and is looking forward to the upcoming performances. In addition to the spectacular shows, the city is also planning measures to increase the attractiveness of the place. This includes the construction of a barrier-free observation tower.
The first performance of the Karl May Games took place between August 16 and September 9, 1952 and attracted 98,400 visitors. Since then, the event has developed into a cultural flagship that not only captivates locals once a year. With the new play “Halbblut” there is great anticipation for the coming weeks, and preparations are also in full swing to offer the audience an unforgettable experience.
