Steinburg celebrates records in city cycling: 132 teams for the climate!

The Steinburg district recently honored the best teams in this year's city cycling at the last Steinburg evening market. With a record 132 teams competing for the title in seven categories, participation increased by 26 teams compared to last year. This year, almost 3,000 cyclists, or more precisely 2,998, took part in the fight against global warming and cycled an impressive 497,173 kilometers - this corresponds to a saving of 82 tons of CO2. Figures like these make it clear: people are pedaling hard here not only for their own fitness, but also for climate protection and environmental protection. Your Anzeiger reports that the climate protection manager Sandra Ludwigh thanked the community of participants and praised the active participation of numerous municipalities.

The district has been taking part in the nationwide campaign for nine years, which was launched with the aim of motivating people to cycle and thus reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The competition took place from May 1st to May 21st this year and is already being held in over 800 municipalities in Germany, including Itzehoe, Kellinghusen and Glückstadt. [Steinburg].

The best teams and communities

There were a few surprises, especially among the winners. The KKS Cycling Team from the Kaiser-Karl-Schule from Itzehoe took an impressive first place among the secondary schools with 48,378 km. The Brokstedt primary school also demonstrated its class with 13,753 km and led the primary schools. The “Volker u. Bärbel” team secured victory in the family category with 1,979 km, while the “WE.Together for Kollmar Neuendorf” initiative triumphed among the clubs with 20,427 km. In the offices and administrations category, the Itzehoe tax office climbed to the top with 4,782 km, while Sparkasse Westholstein defended its position as the leading company with 12,205 km. Most notable was Krummendiek, which secured first place among municipalities with 109 km per inhabitant. Mayor Nicole Gingersen-Britt can now look forward to the Elara e-cargo bike as a challenge cup for a year.

The winning teams were presented with certificates and prizes at a ceremonial handover. Deputy district president Inken Carstensen-Herold particularly praised Krummendiek's performance and praised the high level of commitment from all participating teams. More than just a competition, this event also promotes cycling as an environmentally friendly alternative means that not only helps reduce emissions but also strengthens the health and mobility of participants. This is particularly important at a time when sustainable measures are becoming increasingly important. Umweltbundesamt highlights the benefits of cycling, ranging from fresh air to flexibility.

A look into the future

With the aim of further promoting sustainability, cycling coordinator Thomas Möller thanked the participants for the useful tracking data that will be used to create a comprehensive cycling concept. This concept is intended to improve the infrastructure for cyclists in the Steinburg district in the long term. For next year, city cycling is already scheduled to start again on May 1, 2026. Municipalities such as Sankt Margarethen and Oldendorf already want to apply for the e-cargo bike challenge cup. This makes you want more and shows that climate protection can be very easy and playful!
