A tragic traffic accident shook the region around Illekirchberg on Saturday when a 22-year-old driver lost control of his vehicle. The incident occurred on a curve where the car left the road and collided head-on with a cyclist who was riding on the cycle path next to the road. The 65-year-old cyclist died at the scene of the accident; fortunately, her husband, who was accompanying her, was uninjured. SWR reports.
The impact was violent as the car then crashed into the concrete foundation of a utility pole. The driver and three passengers aged 20 to 22 suffered injuries, some of them serious. The case of a 20-year-old passenger who had to be resuscitated at the scene of the accident and was later taken to hospital in a rescue helicopter is particularly dramatic. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday night.
Cause and investigation
Police suspect excessive speed contributed to the cause of the accident. The Ulm public prosecutor's office has commissioned a report to clarify the exact course of the accident. The state road between Illerrieden and Oberkirchberg was closed until late Saturday evening while clean-up work and investigations were carried out.
