At Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport (FKB), numerous passengers have experienced an inglorious chapter in recent months. Hectic pace and frustration were the order of the day as security clearance struggled with serious problems for months. This resulted in hundreds of travelers missing their flights. The Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport therefore immediately made available 2.4 million euros on September 1, 2025 to improve the situation for travelers.
Urgent measures for improvement
What exactly is the Ministry of Transport planning? The money will be used to create two additional control lanes and to purchase a modern, multi-stage baggage inspection system (MRKA). Minister Winfried Hermann emphasized how important these measures are in order to optimize internal airport processes and minimize the number of missed flights. The costs for the control lanes amount to around 1.4 million euros, while the baggage control system costs around 1 million euros. Both investments will initially be covered by the ministry and later refinanced through the aviation security fee, which will be borne by travelers.
The structural renovation in the area of security clearance is expected to take around six months. However, the current problems point to a broader challenge. A pool of control staff should also be set up to counteract bottlenecks caused by staff shortages and unforeseen failures.
The importance of clearance

Despite all the problems, FKB remains an important hub in regional air traffic that urgently needs a good hand in its handling processes in order to be able to compete with the larger airports in Germany.
