40 years of Sulming village festival: celebrations, music and community await!
The Sulming village festival is without a doubt one of the highlights in the region's festival calendar and will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2025. In the past, thousands of visitors have been drawn to the small town every year. Peter Lippmann, a member of the village festival board, reports on the beginnings. It all began in 1985 when members of the singing club were inspired by a village festival in Dinkelsbühl to create a similar event for Sulmingen. For years there were only small summer festivals in the community, but the new idea quickly attracted attention, especially through reporting by the Ulm Schwabenradio.
What makes the village festival so special? At the first festivals the character was rather modest - wooden benches were borrowed and the atmosphere was reminiscent of a cozy squat. Craftsmen and farmers got involved in creating a varied supporting program with musical performances and demonstrations. The culinary delicacies were all about Swabian cuisine with traditional dishes such as Maultaschen and potato salad. Year after year the festival grew, and from then on wooden huts were built to give the festival area more charm.
An anniversary of togetherness
There have been setbacks over the years, such as the cancellations in 2016 due to flooding and in 2020/2021 due to the corona pandemic. However, after two difficult years, the festival flourished again in 2022 and delighted visitors. Today the village festival not only stands for tradition, but also for cohesion and community, especially for newcomers. This bond is particularly evident in the large number of participants who work together across club and age boundaries, as sulminger-dorffest.de reports.
To mark the 40th anniversary, the festival will be extended by one day and will now take place from July 4th to 6th, 2025. The program offers an exciting range of music, crafts and children's activities at various locations. Particularly noteworthy is the special concert with the band Muckasäck on Friday, July 4th, as well as the entrance of the clubs and craft demonstrations on Saturday. On Sunday, guests can also look forward to various musical highlights until the festival ends in the evening with the Great Tattoo.
Celebrate diversity and traditions
The festivities are also a wonderful opportunity to strengthen regional identity and maintain cultural heritage. The participation of locals and visitors makes the village festival a vibrant expression of community, where customs, traditions and a wealth of culinary specialties take center stage. For example, the range of handmade Swabian delicacies, which include Maultaschen, Kässpätzle and tripe, will be a highlight for many visitors. Access to the various stages and attractions will also be free, giving the festival an inclusive touch.
Overall, the Sulming village festival not only reflects the traditions of the region, but also promotes social bonds within the community. It will be exciting to see how the festival will continue to evolve in an ever-changing world, with new cultural influences and sustainable practices playing a role. These elements help keep festivities alive not only for the present but also for future generations. The anticipation of the upcoming anniversary on July 4th is already noticeable and means that young and old can look forward to an unforgettable time in Sulmingen.
