Drunk man in Ummendorf: Police find stolen treasures!

The alarm bells are ringing – theft crime remains in focus

An incident in Ummendorf has once again brought the dark side of crime to the fore. On Friday evening, the Biberach police were called to a very drunk man who was lying on Fischbacher Strasse. The 40-year-old, who is already known to the police, was taken to the police station because his physical condition meant he was no longer able to help himself. During the check it turned out that the man had two backpacks with him, which, according to initial investigations, contained various stolen goods. These included a Jaguar/Rover charging cable for cars, a Microsoft laptop, a Makita cordless screwdriver and a Samsung cell phone. The police have seized the items and an investigation into the origin of these ill-gotten goods has already begun Swabian newspaper.

A look at the current crime figures in Germany shows that thefts still make up a significant proportion of registered crimes. According to the police crime statistics (PKS) for 2024, a total of around 5.8 million crimes were recorded. Of these, over 1.94 million are theft crimes, which corresponds to around a third of all cases. What is particularly worrying is the slight increase in residential burglaries, while the numbers for shoplifting and bicycle theft have remained relatively stable BKA.

However, in recent years, theft crime has undergone a complex transformation.

As shown in the PKS, there was a 1.6% decrease in theft crimes in 2024 compared to 2023. This development could have various causes: mobility of people, inflation and preventive measures taken to put a stop to thefts. Interestingly, the figures show that shoplifting was reduced by 5.0% in 2024, while bicycle theft saw a decline of 6.9% Statista.

But how can it be that crime is falling overall while the security situation in many cities remains tense?

A more in-depth analysis sheds light on the matter: police crime statistics only record crimes that have become known and dealt with. Many crimes that are not reported or cannot be recorded fall into the dark. For example, dark field studies show that crimes such as rape are often reported less frequently than burglaries. So while the police try to respond to crime with a sharp eye, citizens are often left with an uneasy feeling.

The current situation makes it clear that the security situation in cities like Cologne does not only depend on the numbers, but also on the perception of the population. It remains to be seen to what extent preventive measures and targeted police controls can further reduce crime and reassure citizens.
