Huge construction project: Hindenburgstrasse will become a major construction site for 2.5 years!

What's happening in Esslingen? The redesign of Hindenburgstrasse will begin on August 25th in two construction phases. The renovation of the access to the city center is being undertaken from the Postbar out of town to the Schwarzach Bridge. Loud schwaebische.de The total construction time is around two and a half years and the costs are estimated at a total of 4.2 million euros, of which around 1.9 million euros are covered by funding.

The first construction phase includes the Hindenburgstrasse/Kastanienallee intersection to Hindenburgstrasse/Oberriedstrasse/Unterriedstrasse and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026. The commissioned company Fensterle from Ertingen submitted an offer of 2.6 million euros - 20% below the calculated costs, which is definitely good business for the city. An important point of the project is the renewal of drinking water and gas pipes, followed by sewer, electricity, broadband and road construction work. Christmas spirit will not be lost in the construction site, which can continue even in winter.

Sustainability in focus

Another important aspect of the project is the greening of Hindenburgstrasse in order to improve the urban climate. Beautiful new trees are planted, and the trees and the landscaped green areas are irrigated primarily with rainwater from house roofs. Although the number of parking spaces remains at 27, an additional parking space will be created - this will ensure accessibility to the shops on the construction site and in the city center. Residential traffic to properties and shops remains possible, except for a few days, and garbage trucks can also drive to the properties during the pipeline work. However, residents should place their trash and recycling bins outside of the construction site area.

As part of the redesign, there will also be smaller changes, such as the upcoming Gallusmarkt, which will take place in October. The market stalls must be moved to Alte Unlinger Straße. The complete renovation work also includes a section where access to the city center could be completely closed, which will happen during the renovation between the canal bridge and Alte Unlinger Straße and the Kastanienallee entrance. The plan is to carry out this work either before or after the 2026 flea market.

Looking into the future

The second construction phase will include Hindenburgstrasse out of town and the Schwarzach Bridge, with completion planned for 2028. This extensive project is the result of three and a half years of preparations by the city administration, which received its impetus from its predecessor Peter Dorn, who died in February.

But a lot is also happening outside of Hindenburgstrasse in Esslingen: The redesign of Hindenburgstrasse in Oberesslingen started on June 2nd and is expected to last until the end of October. The area between Schorndorfer Strasse and Keplerstrasse is currently closed, and the new cycle route will be extended by around 150 meters towards Zell, so that the total length of the cycle route will be 3.1 kilometers in the future. This route could be one of the longest bicycle routes in Germany, it is reported esslingen.de.

The upcoming construction work on Hindenburgstrasse is not only a challenge, but also an opportunity for a more sustainable and traffic-friendly future in Esslingen. As always: keep your distance, be patient and everything will be okay in the end!
