Andreas Schmid now heads the forestry department in the Sigmaringen district!

On November 1, 2025, Andreas Schmid took over the management of the forestry department in the Sigmaringen district. He is following in the footsteps of Stefan Kopp, who retired after more than 20 years. Schmid brings a wealth of experience with him: After studying forestry at the University of Forestry in Rottenburg, he completed the preparatory service for the senior forestry service at the Sigmaringen district in 2005 and gained experience in various districts as well as at the Ministry of Food, Rural Areas and Consumer Protection in Baden-Württemberg. Most recently, he headed the Bodenseekreis forestry office for three years before moving to Sigmaringen.

The Forestry Department is the central contact point for all questions about the forest in the Sigmaringen district. One of its most important tasks is the sustainable and natural management of forest areas, whereby the support of the owners of small private forests by 14 forest district managers is essential. Suedkurier reports that the Waldschule Wunderfitz, one of 13 priority institutions for forest education in Baden-Württemberg, will offer environmental education for children and young people. The facility organizes holiday programs, forest Olympics and forest walks to promote awareness of nature and its protection.

A focus on education and recreation

The Wunderfitz Forest School plays a central role in bringing young people closer to the forest and making them aware of the ecological importance of forests. Here children can learn how important the forest is for the environment and which protected animal and plant species live there. Sigmaringen District emphasizes that the nature in the district not only offers an excellent learning environment, but also a variety of local recreational opportunities. The most attractive destinations include the valleys of the Danube, Schmeien and Lauchert, as well as the regions of Upper Swabia and Pfrunger-Burgweiler-Ried.

With Andreas Schmid at the helm of the forestry department, not only will the care and management of the district's forests be continued, but efforts in environmental education work will also be sustainably strengthened. Schmid brings with him the necessary know-how to master the challenges of the future and ensure the diversity of forest supplies.
