Bridge inspection in the Lake Constance district: Danger of traffic jams from June 30th!
Something is happening in the Lake Constance district: Comprehensive bridge tests are scheduled to take place next week between Friedrichshafen and the Bavarian border. These will take place from June 30th to July 3rd and affect a total of ten bridges. The aim of these inspections is to check the load-bearing capacity as well as the stability and traffic safety of the structures. The importance of these tests can hardly be overestimated, considering the constant challenges posed by traffic, weather and wear and tear on materials. It is comparable to a TÜV test for cars, but this is about our bridges - essential components of our infrastructure, as DEKRA emphasizes.
During the tests, the “hands-on” main test required by DIN 1076 is carried out, which is binding every six years. In addition, there are annual visual inspections and interim inspections that are necessary to continually ensure the safety of the bridges. Damage and defects must be identified and remedied at an early stage in order to guarantee road safety. Engineering structures are examined for cracks, corrosion and material fatigue, with all abnormalities documented using photographic evidence. This is crucial for planning necessary renovations, especially after incidents such as the partial collapse of the Carola Bridge in Dresden in September 2024 showed how quickly dangerous situations can arise.
The exam process
The planned sequence of bridge inspections is clearly structured:
- Löwentalviadukt Friedrichshafen (B31) – 30. Juni
- Brücke über die Argen bei Langenargen-Oberdorf (B31) – 1. Juli
- Schussenbrücke bei Eriskirch (B31) – 1. Juli
- Brücke über Nonnenbach bei Kressbronn (B31) – 1. Juli
- Brücke über Gemeindestraße und Wirtschaftsweg bei Tettnang (B467) – 2. Juli
- Brücke über die Bahn bei Tettnang (B467) – 2. Juli
- Brücke über die Argen bei Kressbronn-Gießen (B467) – 2. Juli
- Brücke über Rotach in Friedrichshafen (B30) – 3. Juli
- Brücke über Schussen bei Meckenbeuren-Lochbrücke (B30) – 3. Juli
- Brücke über Schussen in Meckenbeuren-Brochenzell (L329) – 3. Juli
The tests are carried out using a special bridge underside vehicle, which provides access to the underside of the bridges via a swiveling and extendable work platform. The 41.7 ton special vehicle has impressive dimensions of 13 meters in length and 4 meters in height and will therefore offer all the necessary technical possibilities.
The importance of regular checks
The need for regular bridge inspections according to DIN 1076 is emphasized by Biberger. Only through such inspections can the stability and roadworthiness of structures be guaranteed. During the upcoming inspections in the Lake Constance district, the small anomalies identified in the last inspection period, 2019, will also be addressed. However, at that time all bridges were in good condition, which gives hope for this year's inspection.
In total, more than 1,633 bridges need to be inspected in the Tübingen administrative district. A task that municipalities must take seriously in order to ensure road safety and protect the lives of citizens.
Dear readers, if you are traveling in the region in the coming days, please pay attention to possible traffic disruptions. The safety of our bridges is worth it!
