Technology for seniors: Living independently in old age on September 16th!
In the digital age, living and living in old age is becoming easier and safer. This insight is the focus of a free online lecture that will take place on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at 5 p.m. The speakers, Kirsten Heiland and Thomas Heine from the State Competence Center for Care and Digitalization, show how modern technology can make everyday life easier for seniors. The aim is to show how self-determination and security in old age can be promoted through digital tools, as Bodenseekreis reports.
The lecture is part of a larger initiative that runs under the “Getting Older in Lake Constance District” network. This network includes around 300 actors, including geriatric care facilities and professionals who are committed to supporting older people. Registration for the lecture is required; the access link will be provided by email after registration. Anyone interested can register at www.bodenseekreis.de/aelter Werden.
Technological aids for seniors
Modern technologies make a decisive contribution to enabling older people to lead self-determined lives. Various aids are used that not only offer safety, but also increase the quality of life. The technologies presented include fall detection systems, home emergency call systems, inactivity detectors and intelligent lighting controls. The speakers will present these aids during the lecture and demonstrate how these technological innovations can be integrated into everyday life. Ververbraucherzentrale emphasizes that digital assistants are particularly helpful for seniors in order to cope with everyday tasks.
Another example is the “Care Table”, also known as “Waldi”. This tilting touchscreen enables Internet access, video calls and interactive games such as memory. It creates a pleasant atmosphere for the residents by, for example, simulating a fireplace or the sound of the sea. This innovation is primarily intended to promote seniors' activity in daily life and support social interaction. Such technologies, which are used in senior living facilities, are part of the effort to enrich life in old age, as Pflege Today emphasizes.
Diverse options for better living
The lecture will also explain the practical applications of digital assistance systems. For example, there are already age-appropriate assistance systems that are installed in numerous apartments. These systems use sensors to monitor movements and detect deviations from daily routines. If there are any abnormalities, relatives or carers are informed immediately. Such technologies are particularly valuable for ensuring safety without compromising seniors' independence.
With this initiative, the network “Getting Older in Lake Constance” not only wants to raise awareness of technical innovations, but also promote exchange and networking among those involved in the field of geriatric care and digital support.
