Natural monument in Greutäcker: 20 helpers active for our biodiversity!
Last Saturday, October 25, 2025, a cheerful team of around 20 helpers set out on a landscape maintenance mission in the “Greutäcker” near Gärtringen-Rohrau. The campaign was organized by the committed members of NABU Gärtringen-Herrenberg-Nufringen in collaboration with the Black Forest Association Gärtringen. At 9:30 a.m. the starting signal was given for an important measure aimed at clearing an open area of annoying woody growth and thus preserving a valuable habitat for numerous rare plants and insects.
Equipped with clearing spades, hoopoe hoes and brush cutters, the helpers got to work. Particularly challenging was the removal of plants such as roses, sloes, young oaks and the robust red dogwood, which had to be dug up along with their roots. The regular maintenance campaign is already showing positive results, as many areas are in good condition and biodiversity is promoted through the maintenance campaigns. Notable plants include orchids, chartreuse and silver thistle, which thrive in these open areas and bring much joy.
Together for nature
The volunteers' commitment not only promotes the growth of these plants, but also supports the living conditions for wild bees, butterflies and other insects that benefit from such open spaces. The campaign was supported by the changeable weather, which started with light rain in the morning, but cleared up in the afternoon sun as the day progressed and lifted the spirits of the helpers.
To strengthen ourselves, there was a delicious lunch that not only consisted of warm food, but also hot drinks such as tea and orchard fruit and apple juice as well as a sweet dessert. After a busy morning, it is important to replenish your energy reserves. The event ended around 4 p.m. and everyone involved was able to look back with satisfaction on the work they had done and looked forward to the next round together next year.
Another commitment to nature
These actions are part of a larger commitment to nature conservation, as NABU explains in its practical guidelines on species protection. These guides provide information about numerous projects to conserve biological diversity and offer helpful tips on financing and communicating such measures. The aim is to support actors at the local level and to promote the implementation of the Federal Government's National Biodiversity Strategy at the local level. The focus is particularly on practical solutions and examples for the renaturation of water bodies and the protection of wild herbs, which can also be of great importance for the region. This makes it clear that the commitment to nature not only has a local but also a supra-regional dimension.
Such initiatives make it clear that nature conservation commitment is not only important, but also enjoyable. NABU and its volunteers make a valuable contribution here, ensuring the diversity of our nature for future generations. Together we have a responsibility to preserve and grow the treasures of our environment.
