Carnival in Weil: Sarah Himmelsbach breaks the men's monopoly!

The carnival in Weil am Rhein, which can trace its origins back to 1281, is experiencing a remarkable novelty this year. Sarah Himmelsbach, a 24-year-old student of modern German literature, culture and media, becomes the first woman in the history of the Wiler Zipfel fool's guild. This guild has existed since 1957 and is now gradually opening up to women. Her appointment as guild master candidate marks a significant milestone, not only for Himmelsbach, but also for the tradition itself. How publishing house-jaumann.de reported, she will be seen for the first time at the guild evenings at the end of January and February on the Narrenbühne.

Their interest in the carnival tradition was passed on to the head guild master by Dietmar Fuchs, which shows that the guild is open to innovation. The fools' guild currently includes nine guild masters, three candidates and one female candidate, and the anticipation for the upcoming events is palpable.

A lively traditional festival

The Buurefasnacht, one of the most traditional celebrations in Weil am Rhein, is characterized by historical rituals. As early as 1281, the nuns of Klingenthal allowed the youth to collect wood for the carnival fire, which is still lit today on the Sunday after carnival. These deep-rooted customs are complemented by schnitzel bench singing and the beating of slices, as on weiler-kultur.de is to be read. The diversity of types of fools today makes for an exciting parade that keeps traditions alive.

But the road to equality during carnival was also long and rocky. How lkm.uni-konstanz.de shows, women were systematically excluded from carnival activities or reduced to subordinate roles until the 20th century. For a long time their participation was limited to purely decorative functions. It was only with the democratic reforms of 1918 that women received more rights and appeared as equal actors. This represents a significant change that is also reflected in today's celebrations.

In the coming season, Lars Thomann and Kai Blankstein will be the new stage actors responsible for the lighting and sound. Frederik Frey, the third guild master candidate, will also take care of the organizational aspects. Singing and speaking rehearsals are already in full swing, and the program for November 11th. is enriched with local and global political issues, including Donald Trump. Christian Olivieri takes over the musical direction of the evening.

The guild evenings begin on January 30th and round off the variety of local events. In addition, the upcoming exam from November 28th to 30th will be used to finalize the program. On November 11th at 8 p.m. there will be a family evening in the Jahnhalle, to which all fool friends are cordially invited.
