Rabbit breeders show diversity: Pforzheim celebrates district show!
The eagerly awaited district show of pedigree rabbit breeders took place in Pforzheim last weekend. Around 40 breeders presented a colorful variety of rabbit breeds and colors. Each individual animal radiated its individual uniqueness, while the breeders were proud of their lovingly cared for breeding. Each rabbit aroused the enthusiasm of the spectators and filled the exhibition halls with lively activity. PZ News reported that breeders paid particular attention to the specific characteristics of their animals, which were recorded through a comprehensive evaluation system. Judges examine the animals and write their scores on cards hanging on the cages. Abbreviations such as “v” for excellent or “sg” for very good are often seen.
It is particularly exciting that many breeders were able to win prizes at this event. The best among them were even crowned district champions. An absolute highlight for the participants and an incentive for the young breeders who find breeding pedigree rabbits a useful way of spending their free time. In Germany there are almost 100,000 pedigree rabbit breeders who are organized in almost 5,000 clubs. The breeding and improvement of rabbit breeds is coordinated via the Central Association of German Rabbit Breeders (ZDRK). This is done under a strict eye with regard to animal welfare-friendly husbandry conditions and compliance with legal requirements, whereby the breeders also have a responsibility towards nature and the animals. BDRG emphasizes that numerous youth groups are also active, inspiring children and young people between the ages of six and eighteen to get involved in breeding.
Species-appropriate attitude in focus
The species-appropriate keeping of rabbits has become significantly more important in recent years. In 2014, legal regulations for commercial rabbit farming were introduced, which contain specific regulations to protect the animals. According to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, these measures are a response to demands for better farming conditions. The Animal Welfare Animal Husbandry Ordinance places requirements on the design of the housing facilities, such as soil conditions and retreat areas. The aim is to ensure the welfare of the animals and to help them live in a social group. BMLEH explains that rabbits cannot be kept in isolation due to their social nature.
However, species-appropriate husbandry requires more than just spatial aspects. Rabbit owners are required to carry out checks at least twice a day and keep accurate records of their animals. The new regulations also involve a rethinking of breeding: breeders have the opportunity to use herdbook breeding in order to breed hereditary strains with stable performance.
Overall, the district show in Pforzheim shows how much passion goes into breeding pedigree rabbits. It's more than just a hobby - it's a passion that connects generations and promotes animal and environmental protection. This commitment is the basis for ensuring that future generations can also learn from the versatility and charm of purebred rabbits.
