Eberspächer: Job guarantee for 1,000 employees in Esslingen until 2027!
Current developments at Eberspächer are causing mixed feelings among employees. The automotive supplier, headquartered in Esslingen, has reached an agreement at its headquarters that excludes redundancies for operational reasons until the end of 2027. This regulation affects around 1,000 employees in Esslingen and can be viewed as a kind of guaranteed job security. The consent of both sides is necessary to implement layoffs at the site, reports merkur.de.
However, the news is less positive for employees at other locations. While IG Metall has also secured job security for the Neunkirchen location until 2027, there are no such guarantees at other Eberspächer locations. Eberspächer employs around 10,700 people at 80 locations worldwide and is currently struggling with the challenges of the transformation to electromobility. Sales are stagnating, and restructuring will also be necessary at the new electric car heating plant in Bulgaria after it was only sold at the beginning of 2024. These circumstances complicate planning and lead to uncertainty in future demand for internal combustion engine and electric vehicles.
The challenges of transformation
The automotive industry is currently going through a huge upheaval. According to a study by Deloitte This transformation means a downsizing in the area of combustion engine technology and a rapid growth in the alternative drive segment. It is therefore no surprise that Eberspächer also needs a solid plan for the coming years.
The new CEO Jörg Steins stated that sales after the first five months were at the same level as the previous year. Nevertheless, December 31, 2027 remains a crucial deadline for the group to make significant changes to its business model. The current starting point is still uncertain for all sides.
Market developments and future prospects
The transformation towards electromobility is particularly fueled by the uncertainty of demand. Companies must adapt and either rethink their production strategies or risk being left behind. Eberspächer has already taken steps in this direction and is planning a new factory for heaters for electric vehicles in Bulgaria, which underlines the willingness to adapt. But the challenges are great, especially when it comes to technology. As a rule - as the study shows - the progress of the transformation lies in seven phases, which range from a focus on combustion technology to an exclusive concentration on electromobility.
Many companies, including Eberspächer, are currently struggling to find the right balance. Certainly, the new future contract for the Neunkirchen location offers a certain degree of stability and serves to secure jobs, but IG Metall is cautious in its statements and points out that this contract does not represent a guarantee for a risk-free future.
Ultimately, it remains to be seen how Eberspächer will overcome the challenges ahead. The combination of traditional industry and the necessary change towards e-mobility is an exciting but also challenging undertaking.
