Young Union demands: library has to stay in the care center!
in Esslingen is bubbling: The Junge Union has according to the [Stuttgarter News] (https://www.stuttgarter-nachrichten.de/inshalt.esslinger-buecherei-junge-union-generation-gerenerations-will-im-pflegenhof.cb4ddddddd577-4ba8-8efb-2cf7973e9cb0.html) decided against the planned move of the city library into Kögel-Haus pronounced. JO chairman Lukas Schwarz makes it unequivocally clear that the nursing yard should remain as a central location for all generations. "The care center is more than just a location - it is a reliable anchor point in a constantly changing city center," says Schwarz.
The local council will be advised on the future of the city library on May 26, but the JU initially demands more transparency and clear figures before a final decision is made. Vice Chairman Maximilian Güldner emphasizes that the high costs for the move and the renovation of the nursing yard must not be ignored. According to estimates, the move to the Kögel-Haus would cost around 13.5 million euros, while the renovation of the nursing yard would be estimated at around 17.3 million euros.
The nursing yard - a place of encounter
The decision about the location is not very easy, because the Bebenhäuser Nursinghof has a lot to offer. According to the Esslingen.de, the renovation of the nursing center could lead to a new concept that provides for a meeting point with a café and museum shop on the ground floor. In addition, cultural institutions could be bundled there. These options are not only an eye opener for the JU, but also for the general public, which shows a clear interest in a central place for reading and learning.
The youth council has spoken out for the Kögel location, but also demands reliable figures at the costs. The discussion about the move of the library first appeared last year when Mayor Matthias Klopfer brought the proposal into play after the business issue of the fashion house. After all, a move would bring many advantages like more space for children and families as well as improved visibility through an open facade.
public libraries - a review of your role
It cannot be denied: public libraries in Germany have changed enormously in recent decades. This phenomenon is described in the [Kubi-Online] (https://www.kubionline.de/artikel/Offliche-bibliotheken-ihreiker-diliker-s- Expression of a clear change that is influenced by social and technological changes. The libraries are no longer just silent retreat, they offer an important infrastructure for all social classes and age groups.
You are not only a place for books, but also for reading promotion, media literacy and cultural education. For many communities, they are even the most visited cultural institution, which underlines their importance for society.
The discussion about the future of the city library in the Kögel-Haus or in the nursing center is therefore not only a question of the location, but also crucial for the cultural education of the coming generations. In view of the increasing demands on public libraries and the need to position yourself as an educational institution, it becomes clear that there is still a lot of work ahead of us.
The Esslingen municipal council will take a decision on June 30th and until then there are still some important discussions. What is certain is that the decision about the city library could have far -reaching consequences for the cultural landscape of the city.
