Summer holidays 2025: Wilhelma invites you to exciting experiences!

The summer holidays have begun and while many of us are already thinking about our next vacation, there is also exciting news in the future of data protection. July 13, 2025 is all about a current topic: data protection, even during the relaxed summer months. As part of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), many questions have arisen that are not unimportant during the holiday season. In particular, the design of consent to the processing of personal data remains a sensitive issue. The GDPR makes it clear that a clear expression of the data subject's wishes is necessary in order to lawfully process data, as BfDI reports.

As far as data protection regulations are concerned, users should know that consent must be given under certain conditions. This includes active behavior and a lack of pre-ticked boxes. The choice must be made voluntarily and no one should feel disadvantaged if they refuse or withdraw their consent. The obligation to provide information is also important. Users have the right to find out everything important about how their data is handled.

Current developments in data protection

But that's not all. The EU Commission is working on a draft to combat sexual violence against children on the Internet. The plan is for platforms to report and remove this content, as fps-law shows. Website providers should also be able to distinguish between adults and children - an exciting challenge that still raises a number of questions.

The Irish Data Protection Authority also warns of inadequate data protection standards in the USA, which means that the transfer of personal data from the EU to the USA is no longer accepted. What is clear here is that data protection is an ongoing process that has the highest priority, even in international data processing.

Summer holidays – no break for data protection!

But a lot is happening not only at the EU level. Summer time begins in Germany, and with it many discussions about data protection - especially for companies that often resort to staff transfers in the warm season. One thing is very clear: data protection remains an important issue even during the holiday season, and many supervisory authorities carry out preventive audits on companies. The security of email accounts and the legality of order processing contracts are at the top of the list, as various authorities report.

The Federal Association of Consumer Organizations has also filed a lawsuit against Tesla because the “guard mode” records suspicious activities but also records bystanders. This shows the tension between innovative technology and the legitimate need for data protection.

This makes it clear that summer is a time for reflection and improvement not only for the soul, but also for the data. The summer holidays are here, but data protection never sleeps!
