The unlikely duo: 93-year-old and 73-year-old rock the sport of pétanque!
The lives of Bruno Kühn and Peter Heller are all about balls – and not the kind that only come to mind when playing chess. No, the two members of the Pétanque Club Veltheim have developed a great passion for the French ball sport. Even at the tender ages of 93 and 73 respectively, they are full of enthusiasm, train regularly and show that sport has no age limit. Winterthur newspaper reports that Peter Heller wanted to get involved with the Pétanque Club Veltheim since 2022 after he was looking for a new sporting hobby. Equipped with our own balls, the fun quickly came.
Bruno Kühn, on the other hand, discovered the game a little further back. He discovered his passion for pétanque 12 years ago after previously being a crossbow shooter. In 2020 he took the plunge and joined the Veltheim Pétanque Club after playing as a guest at the Bocciadromo in Wülflingen. Sparkling eyes and joy are guaranteed when the two see each other on the pitch. And the great thing: They not only found each other in a sporting way, but also repeatedly emphasize the good chemistry and understanding between them, both on and off the pitch.
Shared challenges and sporting ambition
A bit of competition is part of it, and so Heller and Künd approach the matter with sporting ambition. Her latest adventure takes her to a tournament in Freiburg im Breisgau. “I want to play until 2027, as long as my health allows,” promises Küng. The fun of the game is just as important for both of them as the desire to show their best game.
But pétanque is not only played passionately in Veltheim. In France, too, the scene looks livelier than ever. Ciry recently hosted a lively tournament led by Jean Marc Robergeot and Bruno Piazzolla. Almost 20 doubles dared to start, even though the conditions were sometimes difficult. Montceau Sports reports that Jimmy and Tyler Mellard finally won the final with a clear 13:7.
The peak of the pétanque season
There are also many other tournaments on the agenda in the department. The Ciry football club is planning its own tournament for July 29th. This lively tournament landscape brings together not only local players, but also experienced participants, ensuring that the pétanque community continues to grow and thrive.
The German Pétanque Association is also planning major challenges with the 55plus 2025 national cup, which will be an important point on the sporting agenda for many participants. Exciting competitions are guaranteed, whether in Germany or France.
As we can see, pétanque is becoming an important part of the community and offers a variety of challenges for both older and younger athletes - ideal for keeping fit and having fun at the same time.
