The institute's chief economist, Matthias Günther, is optimistic about construction activity, emphasizing that around 870 new apartments need to be built every year to meet demand. Only 351 building permits were issued for the first half of 2023, further exacerbating the pressing problem of undersupply.

How does this critical situation come about? On the one hand, experts demand that approved apartments actually have to be implemented. The President of the Federal Association of German Building Materials Trade (BDB), Katharina Metzger, blames the federal government for the inadequate measures in housing construction. She is pushing for housing construction to be made a top priority in order to finally stimulate the economy again.
