Dossenheimer Landstrasse: Construction progress on schedule – This is how it continues!

Dossenheimer Landstrasse in Heidelberg is currently being extensively redesigned. Today, November 11, 2025, there is good news to report: Construction work in the southern section between Hans-Thoma-Platz and Burgstrasse is almost complete. The project will last a total of around 20 months and includes several significant improvements to the infrastructure that are particularly important for residents and road users. According to MRN News, more than half of the measures have already been implemented.

Project manager Frank Hagendorn is confident: “The construction process is on schedule.” In three construction phases, not only old tram tracks were removed, but also sewers and supply lines were replaced. New, barrier-free stops and cycle paths will now also be available on Dossenheimer Landstrasse. At the same time, citizens benefit from a fresh road surface that is intended to improve traffic flow.

Reconstruction phase and traffic adjustments

There will be a one-week renovation phase at the end of November, which will last from November 24th to December 1st, 2025. During this time, tram service between Burgstrasse and Hans-Thoma-Platz will be stopped. A replacement bus service on lines 5 and 21 will be set up to ensure citizens' mobility during the construction period. This is seen by the responsible authorities as an important measure in order to maintain around 100,000 tram journeys throughout the entire construction period.

Construction site coordination is a comprehensive undertaking: in the last 1.5 years there have been around 2,700 contacts with residents and businesses. In addition, 85 construction meetings and 16 round tables took place, which were specifically used to coordinate with the business owners in Handschuhsheim. This communication is crucial in order to provide residents and those involved with up-to-date information on construction progress and any restrictions.

Costs and subsidies

The total investment for the redesign measures amounts to around 50 million euros, of which 19.5 million euros are funded from the State Transport Financing Act (LGVFG). Despite the enormous challenges, the project team ensures that escape routes and access to commercial businesses and private properties are generally guaranteed. Short-term restrictions will be communicated directly on site.

Finally, it should be mentioned that an information afternoon will take place on November 14, 2025 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the construction container on Fritz-Frey-Straße. Here, interested citizens have the opportunity to find out about the construction work and its progress directly on site.
