60 years of mobile library: Heilbronn celebrates the blue book bus robi”!

On October 24th, an important anniversary was celebrated in the heart of Heilbronn: the city library celebrated the 60th anniversary of its mobile library. On the nationwide library day, the blue book bus “robi” offered a wealth of media for borrowing on site. Year after year, this mobile brings reading joy to people, from its first delivery in 1965, when a semi-trailer truck brought the first books to readers, to today's agile bus that navigates the narrow street canyons.

The history of the mobile library is characterized by change and progress. In 1981, the semi-trailer was replaced by a more maneuverable bus, which significantly improved accessibility for users. Finally, the newest book bus “robi” was added in May 2011. This is not only a visual eye-catcher, but has also received several awards for its modern interior design; among other things, he received the prestigious Iconic Award 2013 and the A’ Design Award in Silver in 2012.

A colorful media transport

“Robi” is particularly active during school weeks and makes regular stops at primary schools in Heilbronn. He not only stocks classic books, but also audio books, DVDs, comics and even Tonies. It also stops on the last Saturday of every month in various parts of the city, such as Sontheim and Neckargartach, so that residents outside the city walls can also enjoy the benefits of a library.

The mobile library has also established itself as an important partner in educational work by offering themed media bags for schools. Teachers and students benefit from a wide range of offerings that are specifically tailored to the needs of the educational institutions.

News from the capital

A recent event in Berlin also shows that the trend of traveling libraries in Germany is not only causing a stir in Heilbronn. A new book bus was inaugurated here on January 21st, which comes from Finland and arrived in Travemünde by ferry. A 12 meter long bus, which has around 4,000 different media on board, brings this cultural exchange to the citizens of the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district - a real benefit for the region's reading culture.

With a number of citizens committed to the project, the new bus is supported by both the community foundation and the Friends of the City Library. These voices bring to life the idea that a book bus is simply a must - and the second one couldn't follow quickly enough to further expand the reading fun community like this Gazette Berlin reported.

Exchange of knowledge among mobile libraries

The exchange about such innovative concepts is also a central concern of the “Community of Practice Mobile Libraries”, which will soon be inviting people to a virtual meeting. Here, library employees can share their experiences and develop new ideas on how to further promote the mobility of books. A webinar on November 19th invites those interested to participate in the discussion. Participation requires registration via email.

The future of mobile libraries in Germany remains exciting, and it is clear: whether in Heilbronn or Berlin – the idea of bringing reading directly to people is still very popular. The mobile libraries are lively teaching and learning places that always provide surprises and arouse the curiosity of readers.
