The long weekend is just around the corner and many people in Germany are already planning their short vacation. Especially Friday, October 3rd, German Unity Day, brings with it a high traffic density. The ADAC warns of traffic jams, especially in Baden-Württemberg, where severe traffic disruptions are expected from Friday afternoon. [MeinKa] reports that there is also a driving ban for heavy goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes on the motorways these days, which will have an additional impact on the situation.
On Thursday, October 2nd, a particularly high volume of traffic is expected due to the school break in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the beginning of the autumn holidays in Hesse, Saxony and Thuringia. The ADAC even calls this day the busiest in the entire period from October 2nd to 5th, when numerous travelers head out into nature or to the coast.
Congested routes
The forecasts have shown that the following highways in southern Germany in particular will suffer from heavy traffic:
- Autobahn 5 (Weinheim – Karlsruhe – Freiburg – Basel)
- Autobahn 6 (Mannheim – Heilbronn – Nürnberg)
- Autobahn 8 (Karlsruhe – Stuttgart – München)
- Autobahn 81 (Heilbronn – Stuttgart – Singen)
Additionally is loud ADAC severe traffic disruptions can be expected on the highways to hiking regions in the Alps and low mountain ranges as well as to the coastal regions. The A1, A2, A3 and many others are also very relevant to traffic jams.

Significant congestion impacts are also expected at the following weak points:
- A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, A9, A10, A24, A61, A72, A81, A93, A95/B2, A99
Over 1,300 construction sites on the motorways could further worsen the traffic situation. A noticeable increase in traffic jams can also be expected on Sunday when people returning from vacation flock to the motorways. Drivers should therefore plan their travel times well and prepare for longer journey times. Kfz.net reports that drivers should expect additional delays in rush hour traffic on Monday.

To improve traffic flow, drivers should be aware that an emergency lane must be created when traffic is at a standstill. Failure to comply with this regulation can be punished with high fines of up to 320 euros. The traffic reports are based on modern data analyzes and enable better prediction of the traffic situation, with data collection constantly being improved through the installation of additional devices and cell phones.
