Railway construction sites: massive restrictions between Karlsruhe and Pforzheim!

From September 25th to October 11th, 2025, passengers must reschedule between Karlsruhe and Pforzheim. The reason for the restrictions is extensive construction work by Deutsche Bahn, which will suspend direct connections during this period. Long-distance trains on line 61, which normally run to and from Stuttgart, will be rerouted between Karlsruhe and Vaihingen (Enz) via Bruchsal, which will result in the stops in Pforzheim and Mühlacker being eliminated, as bo.de reports.

Regional traffic is also affected: the RE 1 line, which runs from Karlsruhe to Stuttgart, is also being rerouted via Bruchsal. Not to be forgotten are the RE 45 trains, which only run to or from Karlsruhe-Durlach. And anyone who relies on the MEX 17 line should know that it only ends or starts in Pforzheim - here too, the stops between Karlsruhe and Pforzheim are completely canceled. A rail replacement service will be set up to support affected travelers.

Background of the construction work

The construction work is necessary to replace around 5,200 old sleepers on a track on the Karlsruhe-Durlach line. Unfortunately, this also means that the adjacent track has to be closed, which leads to the restrictions mentioned. The work is expected to last until November 20, 2025, with the preparatory work having already begun in August 2025, according to information from Deutsche Bahn.

In order to resolve infrastructure bottlenecks, the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) has approved DB InfraGO AG's new schedule for the general renovation of various heavily used sections of the rail network. This was developed in coordination with numerous partners from the industry. The aim is to better align the renovation periods with the terms of the special fund for infrastructure and climate protection. From 2026 onwards, relief in route prices for essential diversion routes is also expected.

Overview of future construction projects

There could soon be big changes at Deutsche Bahn: By 2029, the federal government plans to invest a total of 166 billion euros in the infrastructure, with around 107 billion euros expected to flow into the rail infrastructure. This massive investment package is primarily aimed at renovating ailing railway lines and motorway bridges, according to Tagesschau.

For travelers, this means that they will have to expect a large number of construction sites and restrictions in the coming years. In the long term, however, these measures should lead to greater punctuality and reliability of rail transport. The railway also plans to convert numerous train stations into modern “train stations of the future”. So far, 40 stations have already been converted as part of a large-scale renovation program.

Deutsche Bahn recommends that all travelers keep an eye on current connections via the bahn.de website or the DB Navigator app. This is the only way to keep track of the necessary diversions and replacement traffic.
