Flood protection for Rastatt: Dam project starts with information market!

On July 1, 2025, an important exchange took place about the future development of a dam section of the Rhine in the Rastatt region. The State Water Authority in the Karlsruhe Regional Council (LBG) has great plans for upgrading an eight-kilometer-long section of the dam, which extends from the Rhine bridge near Wintersdorf to the mouth of the Murg north of Plittersdorf. This section will be further developed in two sections, with all relevant interests coming together in a project support group that met recently. rp.baden-wuerttemberg.de reports that the technical planning is already in the design phase and that there is comprehensive planning of the dam relocation routes.

But what does this mean for the region? The upgrade is not only intended to improve flood protection for the Ried communities and the city of Rastatt, but also to shape the landscape. The flood dam will be constructed as an earthwork structure with a continuous dam defense route on the landside berm. In Plittersdorf, a particularly cramped area, a special construction with an integrated sheet pile wall is even planned. These measures will change the landscape, with sustainability and environmental protection being the top priority.

Natural floodplains for biodiversity

A comprehensive understanding of the importance of floodplains is essential. Near-natural floodplains are rare in Germany; only 9% are still intact. These habitats play a crucial role in flood protection as they buffer floods and compensate for periods of low water levels. In addition, two thirds of animal and plant species thrive in these sensitive habitats. duh.de emphasizes how important intact floodplains are for climate regulation and as recreational areas.

In this context, the renaturation of flooded floodplain meadows as part of flood protection measures could even create new habitats for protected species. These areas, which are flooded during floods, can develop into valuable floodplain habitats. With the redesign, the region could not only benefit ecologically, but also increase the quality of life of its citizens.

Public information and participation

In order to include all interested citizens, the LBG is planning an information market on October 22, 2025 in the Altrheinhalle Plittersdorf. This evening you can ask questions and receive first-hand information about dam planning. The focus here is on dialogue with the public, as the project team wants to ensure that all concerns and suggestions are heard. At rp.baden-wuerttemberg.de you can already find information, a film and the option to subscribe to a newsletter.

In addition, it is important that technical measures to prevent groundwater rises in built-up areas are not forgotten. The entire project aims to optimize flood protection while at the same time securing the agricultural use of the areas. Concepts for further agricultural use are being developed in close cooperation with agriculture.

Overall, it is clear that the plans for upgrading the Rhine flood dam not only improve flood protection, but can also have lasting effects on nature and the region. Finding the balance between protection and use will be an exciting challenge in the coming period.
