Hornet nests in Kraichtal: danger to life banned in time!
On Tuesday, October 7th, hornet nests were removed near Bruchsal and at the Margrave Comprehensive School in Kraichtal-Münzesheim. The measures for hornet fighting were carried out with an innovative technique that enables the animals to be gently eliminated. Loud KA-News Work is done with a water vapor lance that kills the hornets directly in the nest with hot steam. This procedure includes several steps: First, the lance is adapted to the correct height and then stabbed from below into the nest. The following steam ensures that the high temperatures kill the hornets and then fall to the ground.
After killing the animals, they are burned to ensure that no further dangers go out. Asian hornets are not more dangerous for humans than European hornets, but can cause serious reactions in several stitches. Particularly in the case of children in dealing with this type of hornet, special caution is required, such as NDR reported. Allergic reactions are possible, but do not pose a common danger. Those who sting only do so when they feel threatened - for example when their own nest is in danger.
Special features of the hornets
Hornets are extremely fascinating creatures that, despite their impressive size, usually lead a quiet life. As a rule, they do not show interest in human food and are rather harmless as long as you can't get too close to them. Particularly protected, your nests must not simply be destroyed. In exceptional cases, such as near children's playgrounds, experts can intervene and relocate the nests. However, caution is advised: when it comes to removal, there should always be a contact with the lower nature conservation authority, which can issue corresponding permits.
An interesting truth is that the hornet nests can be removed autonomously from the beginning of November, as the peoples will die and the nests will no longer be used next year. This could be a relief for many residents, which will otherwise worry about their safety in summer.
Origin and distribution
The Asian hornets (Vespa Velutina), which comes from Southeast Asia, has now established itself in western and southern Germany and is also spreading in northern Germany. This invasive type has attracted some attention through its striking color, with a black head and an orange -yellow, some attention. Since the beginning of 2025 it has been officially considered an established species in Germany, which underlines the importance of its observation. Sightings are no longer a duty, but still desirable to continue to pursue the spread.
The European hornets (Vespa Crabro), on the other hand, is significantly larger and has a characteristic, reddish colored appearance. Your nests, on the other hand, are not so often found in residential areas, which shows further differences to the Asian hornets. Whether Asian or European hornets, one thing is clear: a good hand when it comes to safety around nests is required!
