Karlsruhe shines: Marbachers explore the botanical treasures!

On July 10, 2025, Rüdiger and Gabi Heilgeist from the Marbach local group of the Swabian Alb Association organized an exciting trip to Karlsruhe. The journey was easy by train. The group's first destination was the impressive botanical garden of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), which is accessible free of charge and is not only used for relaxation but also for research. The gene bank for wild plants in southwest Germany is maintained here.

The garden is home to extraordinary plants, including a primeval sequoia that was discovered in China in 1941. Tropical crops such as papaya, banana, coffee and sugar cane awaited the excursionists in the greenhouses. The real vanilla, which can grow up to 30 meters high, was particularly impressive. Visitors were also able to admire cactus species, giant horsetails and the fascinating “living stones” from South Africa. These plants have the ability to camouflage themselves while the pitcher plants attract and trap their insects.

From the plants to the castle

After visiting the Botanical Garden, Karlsruhe Castle was on the agenda. On the way there, the participants were able to pass the Pheasant Castle, which was originally used to breed pheasants and has an impressive hall from 1773. Instead of climbing the castle tower, the group opted for a relaxed 20-minute tour on the Schlossgartenbahn, better known as the “Bähnle”. A lunch in the Badische Weinstuben ensured your physical well-being.

The walk through the municipal botanical garden was another highlight of the trip. Everyone was able to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere when visiting a café. The Markenplatz with the striking pyramid above the crypt of the city's founder, Margrave Karl-Wilhelm von Baden, represented a historic conclusion to the cultural program. Originally it was a grave in a church that was demolished in 1807. The stone pyramid was built in 1825 and is now a popular photo motif.

A successful trip

Despite the high temperatures, the participants found the trip to be a success. The Marbach local group is already planning further activities, which can be found on their website untermarbach.albverein.eu and will be presented in more detail in the Marbacher Zeitung. The Botanical Garden remains a must for all visitors to Karlsruhe and offers beautiful insights into the world of plants all year round. Information about this historic garden can also be found on botanischer-garten-karlsruhe.de and guide.karlsruhe.de.
