Riots at the derby: injured and arrests in Karlsruhe!

The football world is once again struggling with violent riots. mz.de is currently reporting that the mood in the stadium became extremely explosive during the southwest derby between Karlsruher SC and 1. FC Kaiserslautern. The fans of both camps got into a scuffle after Baden's 3-2 home defeat, while the police and security services tried to calm the situation. Several law enforcement officers were injured, but the exact number of people injured and arrested remains unclear.

The clashes mainly took place at the fence of the visitors' block, which deeply shocked spectators. 1. FC Kaiserslautern strongly condemned the events and criticized the Karlsruhe stadium announcer, who apparently further inflamed the situation. The people of Lauter also complained that the police intervened too late to calm the riots.

Riots in Munich

A comparable picture can be seen in Munich, where tempers ran high during a football match between Albania and Serbia. According to sueddeutsche.de, tensions arose when hundreds of Albanian fans gathered on Leopoldstrasse, while around 50 Serbian supporters celebrated in a bar opposite. After the final whistle, which ended with a narrow 1-0 win for Albania, arguments and blocked traffic caused problems in the city center. While the police had to intervene with a large contingent, residents complained about the blockages this caused.

Even shots were fired and the police found ammunition from gas-operated PTB weapons. A fan was stopped during a wild car parade traveling at 145 km/h, which only further illustrates the dynamics of the clashes. There has long been a historical rivalry between Albanian and Serbian fan groups, which has led to massive riots in the past.

Causes of violence in football

The violence in football has deeper reasons. As MDR reports, outbreaks of violence are often not spontaneous, but are deliberately organized by hooligans. Often these are men who have little sense of success in society and are looking for an outlet for their aggression in football. Fan researchers emphasize that football, as a place with high spectator numbers, has a particular attraction for violent groups.

The aggressiveness that we are witnessing in the current incidents is therefore part of a larger problem that not only affects the football scene, but also raises questions about society and its values. The developments in Karlsruhe and Munich are impressive examples of this.
