ASV Dachau: Departure with a breath of fresh air – new players, new luck!

ASV Dachau, a Bundesliga volleyball team with a remarkable history, is facing one of the biggest personnel changes since its resurgence. Head coach Patrick Steuerwald has the challenging task of quickly forming a new team in order to be successful in both the championship and the cup. The current training program not only includes intensive training, but also important team-building measures to make it easier for the new recruits to get started and to get the team committed to a common goal.

A total of seven players have left the club, including Moritz Gärtner (setter) and Niklas Uhl (diagonal attacker). Simon Gallas (diagonal attacker) and Iven Ferch (middle blocker) are also no longer in the team. Patrick Rupprecht (outside attacker) as well as Augustin Gallardo (middle blocker, back to Argentina) and Fabian Bergmoser (outside attacker, end of career) were also said farewell. The significant personnel change entails a certain risk, but also opens up opportunities, as Steuerwald emphasizes.

New arrivals and talents

On the other hand, the Dachau volleyball fans are happy about the six new additions to the squad, which should bring a breath of fresh air into the team. Among them are three Legionnaires: Carlos Jiménez from Spain (outside attack), Will Kuhns from the USA (outside attack) and Alex King from Canada (middle block). In addition, Marius Büchi was signed as the main attacker from TuS Kriftel, while Severin Brandt from WWK Volleys Herrsching was promoted to the new setter. Another highlight is homegrown player Luca Schwarz, who was promoted from the second team to the Bundesliga squad.

The remaining players, including Luca Russelmann (passer) and Mika Takano (libero), rely on their experience to form a strong foundation. The new season starts in just seven weeks, with the first big goal being to take part in the cup qualifiers on October 12th against the Barock Volleys MTV Ludwigsburg.

A look into the past

ASV Dachau looks back on a long and successful history in volleyball. The department was founded in the fall of 1973 and produced the first men's team in 1975, which was soon promoted to the Bayernliga. The men's team celebrated successes in the German championships and even reached the final of the Champions League in 1996. The first men's team has been playing in the first Bundesliga since the 2022/23 season and is now entering its third season in this prestigious league.

The women's team is also active and competes in the regional league, while the youth teams have been able to win many championship titles despite the challenges in recent years. Particularly noteworthy is the female U14, which won the German championship in 2024 and 2025. The department is not only very popular in the sporting area, but also offers dedicated trainers and a steady increase in youth teams, which looks promising for the club's future.

In order to give volleyball a further boost in Germany, the Volleyball Bundesliga (VBL) is entering into a strategic partnership with FINN, a mobility service provider. The aim is to make mobility within the volleyball community flexible and sustainable. Members of VBL and DVV benefit from special conditions and access to an all-round worry-free package that includes insurance and maintenance. This initiative is intended not only to support sport, but also to increase its visibility in society.

The Dachau fans can hope for an exciting season with a fresh team and ambitious goals. A good knack for dealing with the new players could prove to be the key to success.
