The legendary steam locomotive Eschenau” shines in new splendor in the Technoseum!
The “Technoseum” in Mannheim, one of the largest technology museums in Germany, has been delighting visitors since it opened in 1990 with impressive exhibitions that shed light on technical and social change from the 18th century to the present. A generous exhibition area of around 10,000 square meters provides insights into the development of technology, which is brought to life through historical exhibits. The numerous visitors particularly appreciate the impressive “Eschenau”, a Württemberg T3 locomotive from 1896, which can now be seen again in regular demonstration operations on a 300 meter long track. As the Gaeubote reports, the locomotive runs at set times every day and always attracts the attention of those interested in technology.
The return of the “Eschenau” to the “Technoseum” is a highlight that was made possible by extensive restoration work. These began in 2023 and lasted until 2024. A new boiler system and a comprehensive refresh of the historic appearance have brought the locomotive back to life after it was out of service for some time due to a worn boiler. The original paintwork was reconstructed, with the gray-green tone of the paint in particular requiring difficult but creative work. As mannheim24 describes, the focus during the restoration was on details such as water level indicators and lubrication vessels in order to create an authentic image of the locomotive from 1900.
A locomotive of historical importance
The “Eschenau” is not only the oldest surviving locomotive in its series, but also has a multi-faceted history. Originally built for the Württemberg State Railways, it has been active in various services over the years. From Heilbronn to the Teuringertalbahn in Friedrichshafen, the locomotive has shaped many routes in German railway history. The restorer Günther Theis and his team took great care of the restoration, which cost around 150,000 euros. This was only possible with the support of companies and volunteers who put a lot of heart and soul into the project, reports mannheim24.
The “Technoseum” attracts over 160,000 visitors every year and not only offers the opportunity to see impressive machines in action, but also to marvel at historical vehicles that illustrate the progress of railways. The comprehensive exhibitions allow visitors to move through the different eras of technological history - from the first rail vehicles to modern machines.
An experience for the whole family
A visit to the “Technoseum” is not only worthwhile for technology fans. The interactive elements of the exhibitions ensure that children in particular can immerse themselves in the subject matter in an exciting way. As part of an exhibition on the subject of railways, little visitors can also look forward to a replica of a 400-year-old mine hunt and the opportunity to lay a piece of track together. Such attractions make a stay at the museum an entertaining and educational experience for the whole family.
Visit the “Technoseum” and experience the fascination of the history of technology up close! With its regular trips, the “Eschenau” offers a unique opportunity to experience a piece of living history. This kind of joy of experimentation and knowledge transfer makes the “Technoseum” a must-attend event for anyone interested in the development of technology.
