The world's first interactive language museum is being built in Mannheim!

In Mannheim, more precisely in the Neckar city, an exciting project is being implemented: the German Language Forum (FDS), which is designed to be the first interactive language museum in the world. This innovative concept, which has never existed in this form before, is intended not only to attract visitors, but also to offer a deep insight into the world of language. The opening is planned for the second half of 2028, and those responsible are already hard at work - researching the soil and atmosphere in the neighborhood to create the best possible foundation for this interactive language laboratory. According to [Rheinpfalz](https://www.rheinpfalz.de/lokal/ludwigshafen_artikel,-geplantes-forum-deutsche-sprach-soll-ein-forschungslabor-zum-mitmachen- Werden-_arid,5815688.html), the building will have a striking glass facade that serves as a so-called “climate envelope”, which is not only aesthetically appealing, but also focuses on environmentally friendly aspects.

A lot can be planned, but what about connecting residents? An information evening took place on September 23, 2025 in the Kaisergarten/Campus-Neckarstadt-West. Residents were able to find out more about the construction and vision of the FDS and address their questions directly to those responsible. As Forum Deutsche Sprach reports, this is part of a series of events that deals with the topics of language, migration and multilingualism - an important topic, especially at a time when cultural diversity is becoming increasingly important.

A meeting point for those interested in languages

The German Language Forum is not only planning an exhibition space, but also wants to function as a study location and research center. “The concept is unique and has no precedents,” emphasizes Dr. Pamela Pachl, the curator of the FDS, highlighted. She was recently a guest on the Bayern2 podcast “Sozusagen” and explained how important it is to take innovative approaches to language research. With an interactive project, the FDS will invite everyone interested to actively participate in the research and design of the language.

A further step in this regard was initiated at the beginning of July 2025 with a cooperation agreement between the Marie Curie Realschule Mannheim and the Leibniz Institute for the German Language. Here, learning opportunities are developed together that shed light on the connection between language and identity, linguistic diversity, and language and democracy.

Creative approaches and exciting events

Also in the current event series “The Age of Artificial Intelligence: Hello Future!” is about creative approaches to language teaching. This interactive science performance took place as part of the Festival of the Future at the German Museum in Munich. Such events show that the FDS focuses on innovative and future-oriented topics. At the same time, it sheds light on the challenges that digitalization poses for the language.

The coming years will be crucial in making the German Language Forum a place for encounters, learning and creative engagement with language. With the help of committed partnerships and creative events, the FDS is likely to be popular - not just as a museum, but as a vibrant research and education center.
