Alarming increase in telephone fraud: fake police officers steal millions!
Phones are ringing more and more often in Germany, and there is often more to it than just a nice conversation, as the current situation on fraud shows. In the first half of 2025, the Aalen police headquarters noticed a noticeable increase in fraudulent calls. The fraudsters use bold tricks, particularly by impersonating police officers. The damage caused by this telephone fraud is already in the seven-figure range. Regions such as the Ostalbkreis, Schwäbisch Hall and Rems-Murr are particularly affected, reporting a significant increase in cases compared to the previous year, reports Swabian Post.
Scammers have refined their methods and use three main types of telephone fraud. While the perpetrators often pose as fake police officers or prosecutors, shock calls also occur, such as one saying that a relative has been in an accident. According to the latest information, the amount of damage caused by these shock calls has almost doubled. Seven out of ten of those affected also say that the fraudsters' convincing presentation meant that they did not become suspicious. But the “grandchild trick” is still used, although less frequently because it no longer seems as lucrative.
Increasing number of unreported cases and low detection rate
The clearance rate for these devious scams remains shockingly low and is in the single digits. Many calls come from abroad, primarily from Turkey, which makes things even more complex. The police have already recognized that this is a structured phenomenon, often linked to international call center fraud, like this Federal Criminal Police Office reported. The decline in fraud crime in Germany compared to previous years is encouraging, but crimes abroad, particularly telephone fraud, remain a major problem.
Another warning sign: German law often does not extend across borders, which makes it more difficult to prosecute the perpetrators. The police must adapt their strategies and strengthen international cooperation in order to deal with the brutal wave of fraud. In addition, only around 20 percent of all fraud crimes were reported, which increases the number of unreported cases enormously. The figures show that over half a million cases of fraud were registered from abroad in 2024, with over half of the crimes being carried out over the Internet.
Prevention is key
In view of these worrying developments, education is the most important thing. Experts recommend talking about common scams, especially with older family members. It is important not to give out any personal information over the phone and to hang up immediately if you receive a suspicious call. This information is crucial to avoid possible damage and to raise awareness among people not to fall for the scammers.
Staying informed and confident that you are not passing money on to unknown people are important steps for your own safety. Especially at a time when telephone fraud is becoming increasingly sophisticated and perpetrators operate globally, we should all pay attention to the warning signs. Prevention measures and awareness campaigns can be used to break the vicious circle and restore confidence in one's own safety. As the Mirror reports, this type of fraud is an alarming phenomenon that needs to be addressed not only at the local but also at the national level.
