Summer heat sounds the alarm: a storm front is on the way!

The weather service is sounding the alarm: Today, July 2, 2025, the heat wave in Germany will reach its peak. There is a so-called heat dome over the country, an area of high pressure that blocks the warm air masses and wants to prevent them from rising. These extreme conditions mean that train timetables and everyday life can be thrown into disarray in most regions of Germany. How gmünder-tagespost.de reports, the German Weather Service (DWD) is issuing heat warnings for almost the entire country, with only the outermost edges of the North Sea coast being spared.

The federal states of Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Bremen, Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and northwestern Bavaria are particularly affected. The extensive warnings about extreme heat and UV radiation sound particularly alarming in these areas. The DWD makes it clear: “Stay indoors, drink enough water and keep the rooms cool,” is the recommendation.

Storm front on the way

But it doesn't take long for the weather to change. A cold front from the Benelux countries brings thunderstorms, heavy rain and even hail. Heavy thunderstorms are expected in the south and northwest of Germany on Wednesday evening, which can bring gusts of up to 105 km/h (up to 130 km/h in isolated cases) as well as hail with a diameter of up to 4 cm. How zdf.de reported, the amount of precipitation could be up to 60 liters per square meter.

Heat stress is a serious issue, particularly for older people, the chronically ill and the overweight. tagesschau.de points out that the DWD expects temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius. Such extreme heat is particularly harmful to health; At temperatures as low as 25 degrees, the risk of heat injuries requiring treatment increases massively. The number of heat-related deaths in recent years could continue to rise alarmingly: it is estimated that there were around 3,000 heat-related deaths in 2023 and 2024 alone, primarily among people over 75 with existing medical conditions.

Heat and its consequences

The wave is not only causing a culinary rethink - leisure behavior could also have to change. Sports activities are planned as soon as possible; cooler mornings and evenings could be the best solution here. On hot days, it is recommended to drink 2.5 to 3 liters of fluids, and your diet should also be well thought out: fruit and vegetables are on the menu, while sugar and alcohol are better avoided. For your own safety and health, it is worth paying attention to careful cooling - be it with moist towels or light food.

The situation is not expected to ease until Thursday, when some cooling is in sight, but the weather forecast is uncertain for the coming days. Stay alert and protect yourself from the dangers of the heat wave!
