Massive change in leadership: Helios Klinikum Pforzheim loses five chief physicians!

The situation at the Helios Clinic in Pforzheim is alarming: within a year, the clinic has lost five senior physicians. This not only causes excitement among employees, but also raises questions about future medical care. BNN reports that the departures should not have any direct consequences for medical services, but this raises doubts among many observers.

The most recent departures include two chief physicians who resigned, Shu Fon Muna and Zoltan Derzsy. The latter had sued a court against his immediate dismissal and was successful: the court found that the clinic's allegations were not sufficient. This resulted in Derzsy receiving a severance payment of approximately 287,000 euros. PZ News reports that the departure of Dr. Thomas Bernar, chief physician of the gynecology and obstetrics department, is causing a lot of unrest. Gynecologists from the region have even published a farewell announcement for him because they are concerned about his future care, especially in the perinatal center.

Challenges for the clinic

Clinic spokeswoman Silke Bentner emphasizes that Bernar's departure will have no significant impact on patient care as a qualified senior physician is available. Nevertheless, the constant fluctuation shows that things are not going well at the Helios Clinic at the moment. Three other senior physicians decided to leave the clinic of their own volition at the turn of the year, including Ute Oltmanns (pulmonology), Mohamad Jawhar (oncology) and Britt Schwenz (laboratory and transfusion medicine). Clinic spokeswoman Christina Ihle cites “personal development opportunities” as the reason for this departure.

“The career opportunities that follow are very promising,” says hospital managing director Emre Nazli. As already mentioned, there are increasing concerns about the inability to recruit sufficient medical staff due to departures and general fluctuation. PwC has determined, that there is a significant shortage of skilled workers in the healthcare sector in Germany, and offers insights into how important appropriate salaries are for recruiting nursing staff.

Setting the course for the future

As in the colorful field of medicine, one thing in particular is considered crucial: payment! 68 percent of those surveyed among young nursing staff say that a fair salary is crucial to staying in nursing until retirement. Another 49 percent and 47 percent rank improved working hours and better staffing as important conditions for making the job attractive.

Overall, the next few months will be characterized by realignment for the Helios Clinic Pforzheim. With the new head of obstetrics, Shaojian Ji, previously acting on an interim basis, this could mean a chance for a breath of fresh air. But whether this will be enough to allay concerns about patients' medical care and regain the public's trust remains to be seen.
