Shocking billion-dollar plans: Blackstone is planning a giant data center in North Rhine-Westphalia!
A billion-dollar project is taking shape: The US company Blackstone is planning to build an impressive data center in the municipality of Lippetal, North Rhine-Westphalia. This project is to be implemented with an investment of around four billion euros, although potential users could increase the total amount to up to twelve billion euros. This would make it one of the largest data center investments in Germany. Blackstone has already signed a purchase agreement for a suitable property in an industrial area, such as PZ News reported.
A hyperscale data center is planned, which will primarily be used for cloud services and artificial intelligence (AI) applications. The location in Lippetal, which is close to Autobahn 2 and the city limits of Hamm, was chosen due to an excellent energy supply, including the prospect of using green electricity, as the Westfalenpost highlights. A high-voltage line from Amprion is expected to transport the necessary electricity from the North Sea to the region.
An important signal for the region
The facility is expected to be completed in the early 2030s, with the first parts being operational as early as 2030. The planning process should begin soon. Blackstone’s subsidiary Quality Technology Services (QTS) will operate the data center and offer services to companies that want to use servers or install their own technology. This could lead to the creation of around 100 jobs in the data center itself and up to 600 additional jobs in the region. The local residents in particular are open to the project; This became clear at an information event organized by calf is supported. Mayor Tobias Nillies (CDU) sees the project as a long-term strengthening of the location, while Mayor Marc Herter (SPD) sees the project as proof of the region's innovation potential.
Interestingly, total data center capacity in Germany is expected to increase by an impressive 70 percent by 2030, representing a unique opportunity for the industry. Loud Bitkom AI data centers will quadruple in size and a significant portion of data centers will be supported by cloud computing. The increasing need for high-performance data centers and cloud services is undisputed these days and is also giving Germany a more important role in this sector internationally.
With Microsoft's investment in two locations in the Rheinisches Revier and the new plans for a data center in Lübbenau, which are estimated at eleven billion euros, it shows that the trend towards large data centers in North Rhine-Westphalia is unbroken. The region in between could therefore develop into an important hub for digital services and green energy use.
