Giant kohlrabi weighing 6.2 kg: Upper Swabian gardeners celebrate their harvest!

In the gardens around Cologne, not only the flowers but also the vegetables sprout in gigantic sizes. As the example of Stephan Bofinger and Karin Schmid impressively shows, giant kohlrabi can also thrive in raised beds at home. At an impressive 6.2 kilograms, her latest hit not only amazed those around her, but also found a new place on the table of a friend in Weingarten.

The two hobby gardeners cannot take away the joy of such large vegetables. After the neighbors tasted the kohlrabi, they agreed: the vegetable was tasty and not at all woody. Another giant kohlrabi, expected to exceed the 7 kilogram mark, is already in the starting blocks and is scheduled to be harvested next week.

A blooming paradise

Bofinger and Schmid's garden covers around 600 square meters and offers more than just space for kohlrabi. Around 50 rose bushes enchant the surrounding area with colors, while a variety of vegetables such as beans, carrots and peas also ripen. In the associated orchard, apple trees as well as raspberry and currant bushes are a must. Every year the two conjure up around 100 jars of jam from their berries - a real treat from their own garden.

A secret recipe that the two of them make particularly useful for their hillside garden is their homemade fertilizer mixture. Made from fresh nettle tips and comfrey, it provides plenty of greasing! They use this to produce up to 100 liters a year, which they dilute in a ratio of 1:10 and thus optimally supply their plants.

Kohlrabi – A vegetable with many facets

Kohlrabi is not only a real eye-catcher, but can also be eaten both cooked and raw. The culture period is around 10 to 12 weeks. Compared to other types of cabbage, kohlrabi has low nutritional requirements, which makes it particularly easy to care for. If you want to use it yourself, you should keep the temperatures between 15 and 18 degrees Celsius - ideal for the small individual pots with a diameter of 4 to 5 cm.

But it's not just when planting that you should pay attention to certain things. The planting distance should be 30 x 30 cm for spring and summer varieties, while autumn varieties need 40 x 50 cm. There are also a few things to consider when harvesting: Use a sharp knife or pruning shears to harvest above the base of the stem so as not to damage the tender tubers.

When it comes to care, the bed should be kept weed-free and watered daily, while there is also the option of using the lush kohlrabi leaves - full of vitamin C, they shouldn't just end up in the compost!

Looking for variety? Some of the most popular kohlrabi varieties are “Blaro”, “Delikateß”, “Lanro” and “Super Schmelz”, the latter impresses with its frost-tolerant growth and can weigh up to 8 kg.

It is clear that Bofinger and Schmid's garden is a place of both joy and harvest. Perhaps this example will also nourish the gardening motivations of Cologne residents to find their own green thumb and, at the same time, help bring delicious vegetables to the table - true to the motto: “There's something there.”
