Dispute over vocational school expansion: Ravensburg relies on timber construction!
In Ravensburg, the planned expansion of the Edith Stein School is causing heated discussions in the district council. Instead of tackling a new building for an impressive 100 million euros, the district is relying on a comprehensive redesign of existing district schools. But this decision is not without controversy, as opinions about the expansion of the vocational school center vary widely. How schwaebische.de reported, two variants for expansion were presented.
The first option envisages a wooden structure on the existing parking deck, while the second variant - and preferred by the district administration and school management - envisages the construction of an extension building north of the Edith Stein School, on a meadow orchard. The favored solution also entails construction costs of around 50.5 million euros, which are planned for new classrooms, fire protection measures, modern ventilation systems and green roofs.
Political debates and environmental concerns
Support for the second variant comes from the Free Voters and the CDU. These parties emphasize the need for modernization and the positive impact on the school. On the other hand, the Greens reject the plans and call for a comprehensive assessment of the ecological impacts on nature, the climate and health. They warn in particular about the possible intervention in an important cold air corridor. However, their application was rejected by the majority in the district council, whereupon the second option was voted for, supplemented by some ecological design concepts.
Even the city of Ravensburg is skeptical about the plans because it considers the area of the preferred variant to be valuable. City spokesman Timo Hartmann made it clear that both variants are possible under building law and can be approved, but the debates about the best solution appear to be far from over.
Expansion in Memmingen: A positive example
The new auditorium was fully occupied for the ceremony, which pleased headmistress Gila Barth. The new school building now offers modern classrooms, differentiation areas and open all-day care and is therefore fit for the future. Principals and teachers also reported on the challenges during the construction period and thanked those involved in the construction for their support.
A good example of the successful organization of school construction and expansion is presented in Memmingen, which could serve as a reference for Ravensburg as the city continues to struggle for an ecological balance and the best possible solution for its own school situation.
