Demonstrations against hate: Protests for diversity on July 10, 2025

A powerful signal against right-wing extremism will be sent across Germany today, July 10, 2025. Numerous demonstrations are planned that are directed against hatred, anti-Semitism and the politics of the Alternative for Germany (AfD). According to news.de, workshops, readings and discussion groups are also part of the program in order to provide a clear and diverse to send a public signal for democracy.

With a wide range of dates and formats, an active signal from civil society is being sent in various cities. The AfD, which has been classified as “certainly right-wing extremist” by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, is not seen by many as a solution to the upcoming political challenges. Nevertheless, voices have been raised in favor of banning the party. In the same breath, Frank Werneke, chairman of ver.di, calls for a comprehensive debate about the political landscape and a more intensive approach to right-wing extremist ideologies, as can be read on ver.di.

Tensions in society

The nervousness in society is growing. In public and private discussions the tone becomes harsher; Dissatisfaction with politics is palpable and also a reason for mobilization. The upcoming federal elections offer a platform for addressing issues such as migration, which are a central concern of the AfD and are also taken up by the CDU/CSU. Critical voices, such as that of journalist Michel Friedman, who recently spoke at a demonstration in Berlin, are calling for a clear demarcation from extreme politics. Friedman described the cooperation between the Union and the AfD in the Bundestag as problematic and calls for an unequivocal stance against any form of violence and hatred, as tagesschau.de reports.

In Berlin last weekend, over 160,000 people found their way to the “Uprising of the Decent People – Demo for the Firewall” rally, where the discussion about the AfD and the promotion of human dignity was the focus. But numerous other cities, such as Bonn, Saarbrücken and Cologne, have also joined the movements. In Cologne, for example, around 1,000 water sports enthusiasts with 350 boats gathered under the motto “Colorful instead of brown” to take a stand against right-wing extremist ideology.
