Audi A5 crashes into a tree: driver flees after Horrunfall in Reutlingen!
In the early morning hours of September 2, 2025, a serious accident occurred in Reutlingen that overshadowed local events. Shortly after midnight, at 12:10 a.m., a 32-year-old driver lost control of his Audi A5 on wet roads. The vehicle left the road in a left-hand bend, ran over a traffic sign and crashed head-on into a tree about 10 meters high. The resulting total loss to the car is estimated at around 20,000 euros, as swp.de reports.
What followed was a drama: Despite the violent impact, the driver was able to free himself from the wreckage and fled on foot towards Betzenriedstrasse. Witnesses to the accident who quickly informed the police helped ensure that the driver was ultimately found in a clinic. Evidence of alcohol consumption led to a blood sample being ordered. The recovery of the vehicle was complex, supported by two fire engines and eight firefighters.
Traffic in Germany: A serious trend
Unfortunately, such accidents are part of a worrying trend in Germany. A total of 2,839 people died in road traffic accidents in 2023, an increase of 51 deaths compared to the previous year. On average, eight people lost their lives on the roads every day and over 1,000 people were injured, as mehrachten.de reports.
What is particularly alarming is that vulnerable road users, including pedestrians and cyclists, are disproportionately affected by these accidents. Two thirds of those killed in traffic in cities and towns were on their own two feet or on a bicycle in the fatal accidents. In addition, the proportion of fatal accidents involving cyclists has doubled since 2000, which makes the importance of safety measures in traffic all the more urgent.
Need for action recognized
Seema Mehta, press spokeswoman for the German Road Safety Council, warns of the need for action, especially for specific groups in road traffic. The 2024 amendment to the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO) encourages municipalities to make traffic safer, for example by making it easier to set up zebra crossings. This falls within a larger goal of the federal government: reducing traffic fatalities by 40% by 2030.
Alcohol consumption remains another key issue. 37,172 alcohol-related traffic accidents were recorded in 2023, a decrease of 4.1%. However, improper speed remains the leading cause of fatal accidents, particularly on rural roads, where 58% of fatal accidents occurred. The focus is now increasingly on Vision Zero – the goal of definitely not seeing any more traffic deaths on the roads.
The tragic events in Reutlingen clearly illustrate how quickly an everyday moment can turn into a dangerous scenario. Old wounds, such as the opened accident statistics, require decisive measures to ensure that such incidents do not repeat themselves.
