Memories of Reutlingen: Take part in the photo search!
Do you know the story behind the pictures? The Reutlingen City Archives recently caused a stir with its photo search, which was carried out in July 2023. According to the information from GEA All six images presented for identification were a complete success. City archivist Philipp Klais was pleased with the active participation of readers who provided information about the historical motifs.
What particularly stands out is an image of a street intersection in Betzingen from 1983, which caused a lot of headaches for those involved. An attentive reader was able to identify the GWG residential building at the intersection of Griesingerstrasse and Weidenstrasse. However, this building was demolished in the late 2000s and chic terraced houses now stand in its place.
Memories of Engstlatt
Another remarkable picture that delves into the history of the city of Reutlingen shows a “village with a church” from 1953, which depicts the Balingen district of Engstlatt. It was found out that a reader has close connections to this place - her husband grew up in the rectory there until 1959. These personal stories give the images an emotional depth that is underlined by the history of the city and its people.
In addition, the identifications also took place at buildings on Agnes-Miegel-Straße, where a property with house number 1 was located. The street bears the name of the well-known writer Agnes Miegel, which was named in honor of this honorable personality in 1958. But it's not just street names, there are also aerial photographs: an aerial photograph of a quarry from 1953 was initially incorrectly located in Tübingen, but the outdoor swimming pool actually comes from Böblingen.
A variety of images
Philipp Klais asked the public for further help in identifying six new photographs from the city archives. The Reutlingen city archives have around half a million individual images that extend over 240 meters of shelves reutlingen.de confirmed. This impressive collection documents the city's history from the mid-19th century to the present and covers a wide range of regional and national topics.
In addition to the city's history, the city archive is also responsible for the careful storage and provision of official documents. The collection includes, among other things, documents from Altenburg, Betzingen and many other district communities. Unofficial provenance, such as Friedrich List's documents, are also in the archive. This variety can also be discovered in the city's specialist library, where literature on city and regional history is available, according to the information deutsche-digitale-bibliothek.de.
A look at the city archive is worthwhile not only for history fans, but also for anyone who would like to find out more about their own family history. Who knows, maybe you will find your own picture in the extensive collection full of stories and memories! The archives have launched a call for action this week: help identify the new photographs and perhaps reveal an as-yet-unknown story.
