Historic shooting range in Schramberg shines after renovation!

The Schramberg Rifle Society can look back on an exciting time, as the historic small-caliber shooting range in Raustein was extensively renovated. These facilities, inaugurated in 1955, had visibly suffered after almost 70 years of intensive use. The roof and the outer shell were particularly in need of renovation. After intensive work from autumn 2024 to May 2025 in collaboration with the city, the modernization has now been completed.

The senior rifle masters Markus Kuhner and Thomas Braun appeared relieved and grateful to the Schramberg city administration. Together with Mayor Dorothee Eisenlohr and Christoph Raetzer, the project manager in the building construction and building management department, they examined the successful implementation on site. An important element of the renovation was the replacement of the old, asbestos-containing roof with a modern, insulated construction. In addition, dilapidated wooden windows were replaced, the concrete structure was repaired and the facade was given fresh plaster.

The effort paid off with an investment of around 70,000 euros by the city, which awarded the contracts exclusively to local specialist companies. The shooting society praised the professional work of the craftsmen and the smooth coordination with the city authorities. Despite the extensive renovation work, the association remains responsible for the maintenance and design of the facility's interior and outdoor areas.

Opening of the new shooting hall

Another milestone for the shooting club was the opening of a new shooting range on the Raustein. On the occasion of these celebrations, the gunners Klaus Grießhaber and Erich Bauknecht kicked off the event with cannon fire. Senior Rifleman Markus Kuhner emphasized the long wait that the company had for this wonderful moment. The hall's construction took around six months. It offers space for eleven shooting lanes and measures 14 meters in length and 12.5 meters in width.

A special feature of the new hall is that the walls are lined with OSB and plasterboard to ensure fire protection and bulletproofing. Comfort has also been taken into account: infrared heaters ensure pleasant temperatures in the cold months. This means the shooters can concentrate optimally on their competitions. Modern electronics are responsible for the technical equipment, allowing hits to be displayed on a tablet.

The opening ceremony was also attended by numerous well-wishers, including Mayor Thomas Herzog, who pointed out the long planning phase since 2010 and highlighted the financial support of 110,000 euros from the city. State shooting champion Hannelore Lange and Dieter Hofer from the Rottweil sports district also emphasized the importance of the hall for shooting sports.

A look at the history of shooting

A look at history shows that shooting sports have a long tradition in Europe, which goes back to vigilante groups in the Middle Ages. The first recorded shooting competition took place in Zurich as early as 1442. In Germany and neighboring countries, the club system, which also includes shooting sports, experienced an upswing after the wars of liberation in 1815.

After the Second World War, shooting clubs were initially banned in Germany, but were later allowed to resume their activities. The founding of the German Shooting Association in 1951 represented another turning point that gave new impetus to shooting sports in Germany. In the second half of the 20th century, shooting became increasingly recognized as a modern sport.

The city championship for amateur shooters begins on July 1st in the renovated small-caliber range and the modern air rifle hall, and the physical well-being of the participants is also ensured. The celebratory award ceremony will take place on July 12th at the Schützenwaldfest in Raustein.

With such varied events and the clear commitment of the shooting society, Schramberg shows that interest in shooting sports is unbroken and that the community continues to be very popular.
