Sensation on Cash for Rares”: gold ring exposed as costume jewelry!

On July 6, 2025, the popular ZDF program “Bares für Rares” once again brought together hope and disappointment. The saleswoman Claudia Löchle from Rottweil brought a gold ring that was an heirloom from her father into the shipment. Moderator Horst Lichter expressed confidence that the ring could have real value, but expert Wendela Horz quickly became suspicious.

After a detailed examination, Horz discovered that the ring was made of 333 gold, which is untypical for a supposed piece of jewelry with a real diamond. An electronic tester was used as a test, which revealed that the stone in the ring was simply a zircon. Lichter then described the ring as “costume jewelry for men,” which greatly dampened Löchle’s hopes of a lucrative sale. The material value of the gold in the ring was estimated at just 100 euros. Disappointed, Claudia plans to return with more rings so that she might have better luck next time. By the way, “Bares für Rares” is broadcast Monday to Friday at 3:05 p.m. on ZDF, and it will be exciting to see what treasures will turn up there, as derwesten.de reports.

The joy of unexpected values

A completely different picture emerges from Evelyn Kroner from Munich. She also appeared on “Cash for Rares” and wanted to sell a ring that she had inherited from her grandmother. A jeweler had previously classified the ring as not particularly valuable. But the expert Heide Rezepa-Zabel had even happier news: She discovered that the ring contains a 2.5-carat aquamarine as well as several brilliant-cut diamonds and is made of 750 gold. The gold was already worth 190 euros, while the aquamarine was valued at around 200 to 250 euros. Overall, Zabel valued the ring at up to 700 euros.

From a starting bid of 300 euros, the price quickly rose to 600 euros. There the dealer Elke Velten-Tönnies got out, while Julian Schmitz-Avila wanted to bid. Evelyn was completely surprised by the high value of her ring and was looking forward to being able to donate the proceeds of 600 euros to an animal shelter, like tag24.de reported. This is a real win, not only for Evelyn, but also for the animals who need help.

Jewelry and its tax aspects

Interestingly, the tax aspect should not be neglected when selling jewelry. According to the rules of the ErbStG, items without tax exemptions must be stated with their market value. It is important to know that there are some tax reliefs for taxpayers in tax class I, which includes spouses and children. Tax exemption is granted for household goods up to a value of 41,000 euros, but this does not apply to precious metals, gemstones and the like. In the case of valuable art objects or pieces of jewelry, an expert report is often required in order to correctly determine the “common value”. erbrecht-ratgeber.de provides information on this.

So it remains exciting, both for the seller Claudia Löchle, who hopes for better times, and for Evelyn Kroner, who is sending a sign of solidarity with her animal shelter donation. In the world of “Cash for Rares” everything is possible – from bitter disappointments to unexpected strokes of luck.
