On October 19, 2025, a special event took place in the Helios Arena in Villingen-Schwenningen: the first central swearing-in ceremony of the Baden-Württemberg police. 1,220 aspiring police officers took their oath of service, laying the foundation for their future careers. This event attracted around 5,000 visitors, including many relatives and friends of the candidates who wanted to celebrate this important step together. The atmosphere was characterized by pride and anticipation of the challenges ahead in a job that places high demands on discipline and team spirit.
In his speech, Interior Minister Thomas Strobl emphasized the great responsibility that comes with being a police officer. He emphasized that not everyone is up to the challenge and that qualities such as humanity and commitment are important. He also pointed out that over 14,000 young people have been recruited into the police service since 2016, which has been supported by the expansion of training locations and the renewal of equipment. This year, an investment package of around 17 million euros was approved for the police in Baden-Württemberg in order to further improve the framework conditions.
A sign for the future of the police
Matthias Zeiser, President of the University of Police in Schwenningen, emphasized that the swearing-in ceremony was held centrally for the first time for all newly hired officers. This not only illustrates the cohesion within the police, but also the effort to attract young talent and prepare them optimally for their future tasks. The new police officers were trained at various educational locations, including Bruchsal, Herrenberg, Wertheim, Lahr and Biberach.
The ceremony was led by State Police President Stefanie Hinz and musically accompanied by the Baden-Württemberg State Police Orchestra. This ceremony was not only about the new service, but also as a symbol of the values that the police service should embody: justice for all, independence of origin and an active commitment to the basic democratic values of our society. This is also clear in the service oath, which professes to defend the constitution and advocates value-oriented behavior. Before the swearing-in ceremony, a large police display took place, which began at 2:00 p.m. This not only offered visitors insights into the work of the police, but also the opportunity to experience special vehicles and technology up close. The presentation of the rider and dog squadron as well as the demonstrations by the water police and the riot police were just some of the highlights. Visitors were also able to find out about career opportunities in the police and criminal police.
The event was free for all guests and was broadcast live on a large screen. Several food trucks took care of the physical well-being and served the large crowds with culinary delicacies. This made the swearing-in ceremony not only an important event for the new police officers, but also a celebration for the whole family.
