Santa Claus letters and preparations
In the period leading up to St. Nicholas Day, special St. Nicholas mailboxes are also available. These can be found starting November 8th in the following locations:
- Pfarramt St. Franziskus, Erzbergerstraße 11
- Familien- und Begegnungszentrum St. Elisabeth, Adolph-Kolping-Straße 8/2
An important message of St. Nicholas' visits is the joy they are intended to bring. Families are invited to prepare their children for this special evening with songs and stories. It is emphasized that Santa's visit should not be an early Christmas. Therefore, gifts should be kept small and modest. The responsible organizer, Markus Weber, emphasizes that it is not about education, but about fun and surprise for the children.
The tradition of Santa Claus
St. Nicholas Day itself has a long tradition and is legendary Nicholas of Myra back, also known under the name Nikólaos Myriṓtēs. He lived between 270 and 286 in Patara, where he worked as Bishop of Myra. Not only is he a saint of the Eastern and Latin churches, but he is also revered as the patron saint of sailors, students and many professions. His memorial day is on December 6th. Nicholas became known for his charity and helpfulness, which made him a popular figure in German-speaking countries.
The tradition of putting the Santa Claus figure in the foreground as a gift-bringer developed over the centuries. Sinterklaas is particularly celebrated in the Netherlands, bringing gifts on December 5th. In Germany, on the other hand, various customs show affection for Nicholas, although art does not fail to traditionally depict him in the garb of a Catholic bishop.
St. Nicholas Day is therefore more than just a festive occasion; it is deeply rooted in the culture and traditions of the people, and this is kept alive in Schwenningen in particular. It will be exciting to see how many families will take the opportunity to look forward to this special encounter with Santa Claus.
