Spectacular hornet nest: Villingen invites you to animal discovery!
The Asian hornet caused quite a stir in Villingen-Schwenningen. Ralf Claaßen, a dedicated wasp and hornet expert, made an interesting find: a live specimen of this insect species, which he discovered during his search for a hornet's nest. This nest was hidden in tall trees and finally became visible in October at a height of around 16 meters near the Steppach School. The unusual discovery was not only a surprise event, but also brings with it an educational exhibition.
The hornet's nest was professionally removed by Claaßen and then prepared so that it can be presented as an exhibit in Villingen. The impressive nest impresses with its several honeycomb levels, which consist of chewed wood fibers and contained many larvae. To preserve the integrity of the nest, it was first frozen and then carefully dried.
A spectacular exhibit
On November 22nd, the hornet's nest will be presented to the public at a special event in the monastery courtyard between Villingen and Schwenningen. The event is titled “Animal Christmas” and will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Here, visitors can not only admire the prepared nest, but also visit numerous sales and information stands. Claaßen will be on site and take part in the wasp advisory stand to exhibit further exhibits of Asian hornets. These are cast in epoxy resin, which makes them optimally presented for viewing.
The Asian hornet, which originally comes from East Asia, is a new phenomenon in Germany and has spread rapidly since it was first sighted. Their appearance not only leads to fascination, but also to a certain level of concern, as it represents an important element in ecology, but also necessitates raising awareness on how to deal with invasive species.
The upcoming event not only offers the opportunity to learn more about this impressive insect species, but also a good hand for interesting conversations and shopping opportunities. It will be interesting to see what additional information Claaßen and the information stands provide. If you have the chance to be there, you shouldn't miss the event!
