Boathouse will remain closed until 2026 – million dollar renovation planned!

In Sigmaringen it will be quieter in the coming months because the popular Boathouse must close for at least four months. Operator Soufyen Charni has announced that the closure is necessary due to planned extensive renovation work. Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations in the boathouse will therefore be canceled in 2023 - a bitter loss for many who relied on the convivial atmosphere.

The renovation will cost around 1.05 million euros and aims to expand and renew the kitchen, which has been perceived as too small since it opened in 2013. The planned extension will increase the size of the kitchen by around a third, with storage and cold rooms to ensure more efficient food preparation. “We cannot maintain operations during the renovation work, especially for hygiene reasons,” said Charni. The extension measures five by ten meters and is designed in the same architectural language as the old building.

Renovation work and employee measures

A modern ventilation system will also be installed, which should ensure better ventilation in the kitchen. Accessibility to the rooms will also be optimized: the stairs to the roof terrace will be relocated to enable access from the Gorheimer Weiher in the future. Charni plans to offer more catering for hotel guests at Karls Hotel during the renovation phase in order to mitigate the economic impact of the closure.

The renovation also brings changes for the employees. Around 30 employees have to be temporarily put on short-time work, while trainees are accommodated in other companies. Luckily, the brewery will no longer have a day off during this transition period, meaning brewing fans will still get their money's worth. Despite a difficult financial year, Charni is satisfied with the general development and expects to reopen in March 2026.

Financial aspects and future plans

Charni took over the boathouse in 2017 and has a permanent lease with the city, which benefits financially from the lease as it is linked to sales. The city therefore has a good interest in the boathouse opening its doors again soon. A further extension, which will create changing rooms and lounges for the staff, is already being planned. But implementation depends on financial viability and grant approval.

The people of Sigmaringen are already looking forward to the many great events that the boathouse will offer again after the renovation. Until then it’s time to look forward to what’s to come!
