New BSW district association in Ravensburg: Sahra Wagenknecht strikes!
On August 14, 2025, a new political group was launched in Ravensburg: The Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) has now founded its own district association for the Lake Constance-Upper Swabia region. This development is a significant step for the party, which has an organizational presence in the region for the first time. The new district association includes the districts of Ravensburg, Sigmaringen and the Lake Constance district and is led by Richard Holderied as chairman, with Tobias Kuhn and Volker Werle supporting the leadership as deputies and treasurer. Brigitte Ehrich and Martin Kohler were elected as assessors to the five-member board, as Schwäbische.de reports.
The country's head Manfred Hentz sees this new structure as a clear offer for all those who oppose armaments and social cuts and advocate freedom of expression. It is no secret that the left in the Ravensburg district is strongly against the new party and so far there has been hardly any activity by the BSW. Interestingly, some former members of the Left, especially in the Lake Constance district, had expressed sympathy for the new formation. This shows that the political waves in the region are far from calm.
Background and creation of the BSW
The alliance was founded at the end of 2023 as a split from the Die Linke party, initiated by Sahra Wagenknecht and other prominent politicians such as Klaus Ernst and Fabio De Masi. The company was formally founded on January 8, 2024. It is now classified as left to extreme left, with populist and nationalist tendencies, as Wikipedia outlines. The party aims to represent content that has had increasingly less space on the left.
In terms of content, the BSW positions itself clearly against green politics and rejects military support for Ukraine. This attitude caused a stir, particularly during the war in Ukraine. Critics also accuse Wagenknecht of having too close a connection to Russia, which is reinforced by their calls for a stop to arms deliveries and immediate negotiations with Moscow. Another controversial topic is their views on migration, which are sometimes associated with the right-wing populist AfD.
The left in transition
As a result, the local branch of the Left disbanded in 2023. After the departure of prominent members such as district councilor Korbinian Sekul, who left in protest against the party's pacifist stance during the Ukrainian war, nothing remained the same. Sekul has now switched to the SPD and represents it in the district council. The Left then no longer stood for local elections in 2024 and has begun to establish a new district association with a small district, led by Jo Scharpf and Atakan Celik. According to the party, there are currently around 77 members, including many newcomers.
The focus of the left is now on social justice, climate protection and the fight against hatred and division, and they are trying to increase their own visibility with actions such as the popular motion “Rents down” and participation in Anti-War Day. In the 2024 elections, the Left recorded an increased number of votes in the Ravensburg constituency compared to previous years, even if it was not enough to return to the Bundestag.
In summary, it can be seen that the political landscape in the region is changing. The founding of the BSW district association is not only an expression of individual opinions, but also reflects the deep fissures within the left that have become apparent in recent years. Sahra Wagenknecht's alliance could thus become an important factor in the future political discussion in Lake Constance-Upper Swabia.
