New Indian restaurant Papadam: Pfullendorf is celebrating a comeback!
A lot is happening in Pfullendorf: The former Café Moccafloor has opened its doors to the new Indian restaurant Papadam. The restaurant, run by Mahadevi and Anand Motty, combines traditional Indian cuisine with a modern ambience and can accommodate up to 100 guests. The two operators have been based in Pfullendorf for many years and have made it their mission to revitalize the city's restaurants after the building on Main Street had been empty for several years. [Schwäbische] reports that Café Moccafloor moved to Postgasse in autumn 2022 and that the premises now have a fresh look after extensive renovation.
For the Motty couple, the decision to open their own restaurant was a big step. Mahadevi Motty previously worked as a housewife and will now dedicate herself fully to the restaurant, while Anand Motty will continue to work as an engineer. The two complement each other perfectly in their new phase of life. They are supported by chef Bhavendra Kumar and two other chefs, who together create a diverse range of chicken, lamb and vegetarian and vegan dishes.
A piece of home for everyone
Mahadevi Motty's wish is to use Papadam to create a place that is open to all people - regardless of age, origin or gender. In the catering industry, which has overcome many challenges in recent years, it is important to create a space in which guests can feel comfortable. According to [G-Wie-Gastro], independents like Papadam are currently on the rise, while the catering industry is generally suffering from a decline. The statistics show that in September 2023 the number of employees in the catering industry was 6.7% below the 2019 level.
Especially now that 78% of guests prefer local products, it is essential for new businesses like Papadam to establish themselves as part of the community. The Motty couple have lived in Pfullendorf since 2012 and are confident that their kitchen can bring life back to the main street, which has become quieter in recent years.
A new chapter for the main street
The main street has experienced a heyday in the past, and Mahadevi Motty can clearly remember the hustle and bustle during carnival times. “I hope that our restaurant will help to refresh the mood here,” said the operator. This is not only a personal mission, but also an important goal for the local gastronomy that wants to regain its footing. According to current trends, Indian and Japanese cuisines are growing in popularity, which puts papadum in a favorable light. [G-Wie-Gastro] speaks of a real upswing in these areas.
But the commitment goes beyond the culinary: Papadam is intended to be a place of gathering, and the Motty couple are determined to stay here for a long time and have a positive influence on the community. Anyone who visits the new Indian restaurant can look forward to a wide range of dishes and at the same time have the feeling of being part of a growing community.
While the catering industry in Germany continues to have to adapt to the challenges, the belief in a positive future remains unbroken. Whether Papadam will be the key to revitalizing the high street remains to be seen, but the signs are good for the new restaurant and its operators. [Swabian]
