The ceremonial inauguration of the newly built took place in Sigmaringen on Friday Bertha Benz School instead – a truly important day for the region! After three years of construction and an impressive investment of around 113 million euros, the largest in the history of the Sigmaringen district, the new school building sees the light of day.
Architecturally, the building impresses with its modern shape, which is reminiscent of a coliseum and is complemented by elegant wooden cladding. The Bertha Benz School now includes 45 classrooms, offices, meeting rooms and a cafeteria. A green inner field, the so-called “campus”, offers the students the ideal environment for breaks and free periods.
A project of the century
District Administrator Stefanie Bürkle described this new building as“Project of the century”, not without reason! The district has taken out a loan of 40 million euros to make this dream come true. An additional part of the new building, the “Bar”, offers practical spaces such as a car repair shop and homework rooms and is a welcome expansion for the 1,400 students who can now all learn under one roof.
A special guest at the inauguration ceremony was Jutta Benz, Bertha Benz's great-granddaughter. She presented gifts to the student representatives, bringing a touch of history to the celebrations.
Sustainability and modern technologies
When building the Bertha Benz School, emphasis was placed not only on aesthetics, but also on sustainability. The new building uses recycled concrete and is equipped with modern energy efficiency technologies, including a PV system and a heat pump. The district is committed to ensuring that the building meets the energy standard BEG 40 EE and has the goal of achieving platinum certification from the German Sustainable Building Council. The site also contains an area of around 40,000 m² with various outdoor areas that, for example, enable the planting of 114 standard fruit trees. With a gross floor area of 20,300 m², a flexible school building is available for different types of schools and subject areas.
Insights and future perspectives
What awaits students and teachers is an innovative space that is tailored to the needs of modern education. The design comes from the renowned architectural firm LRO GmbH & Co. KG and was realized as part of a public-private partnership. Educational architects and experts illustrated what contemporary school rooms should look like: bright, inviting and functional in order to provide the learners with the best possible support.
