Civil courage in Meßkirch: Two girls save a senior and are honored!

A remarkable story of moral courage and willingness to help happened in June when the two students Emily and Ronya, who can now look forward to being awarded the Civil Courage Prize, stood by a helpless senior citizen. Schwäbische reports about the incident, which shows how important it is not to look away in critical situations.

The senior was obviously in trouble when the two girls noticed him in the city area. He appeared confused, had an IV needle and had injuries to his face and legs. Although he assured him several times that everything was fine, the two of them didn't let up. They spoke to him, supported him and took his luggage to take him to a bench in front of a nearby supermarket. There they did everything they could to organize help.

The path to the right help

The encounter was initially challenging. The girls tried to reach old people's and nursing homes in the area, but without success. Their cell phones were almost empty, which didn't make the situation any easier. In order to keep the senior safe, they finally called the police. Since the police station in Meßkirch was closed, they had to wait for a response from Sigmaringen. This lasts 45 minutes!

While they waited, they continued to check on the senior and received support from passers-by. A nurse who happened to be there finally recognized the senior and was able to help him. After this incident, the girls were unsure if they had made the right decision. But the confirmation from their parents and the positive feedback from the police, who praised their actions, encouraged them both to act.

Civil courage as a valuable asset

Civil courage in the sense of standing up for others is not only of great importance in this situation. Regular police reports and campaigns, such as the “tu-was” initiative, illustrate the importance of taking action in difficult situations. The Federal Police lists six rules that everyone should follow in order to provide help without endangering themselves. This includes being alert, encouraging others and contacting the police if necessary.

The incidents of street crime are disturbing. According to the Polizei-Beratung, the number of dangerous and serious physical injuries increased significantly in 2024. This statistic underlines how important it is for citizens to show moral courage. The story of Emily and Ronya is therefore not only an impressive individual achievement, but a call to everyone to act courageously in similar situations.

At the award ceremony, the two were excited, but also proud that even the district administrator was surprised by their age and their decisive actions. Their answer to the question of whether they would be helpful again was a resounding “Yes!”, which should serve as an inspiration to many.
